I would also appreciate any views as we are in a similar position ie a place at Reed's versus others schools (not St George's).

Do you want co-ed or single sex? Catholic or C of E?

I think both are quite good for sporty types.

Bluemarlin · 22/02/2011 09:27

My son is Catholic, but currently not in a RC school. I am more interested in getting a comparative view of the schools in terms of sports, ethos, academic achievements and don't know many who have attended St Georges.
Thanks

St Georges is extremly balanced in sport and academic unlike the junior school . St Georges grounds are amazing and does get fantastic results . I think either one would be a privilage to attend .

Does anyone have a ds who attends Reed's but lives a way off eg Wimbledon or Sheen? I'd like to know how they find the travelling and what seems like a long full-on day.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 22/02/2011 11:59

Yes my neighbour's son is there now, and their eldest left two years ago.

First DS was a weekly boarder, current one is a day boy. We live a little closer than Wimbledon, and he gets a school bus before 7 am every day and is home by about 5. He was offered weekly boarding like his bro but chise not to.

They are possibly not the most academic ( both failed the CE pretests for KGS ) but very sporty - cricket and rugby.

Their parents are very happy with it.

Bluemarlin · 22/02/2011 12:32

We are thinking about boarding too. I guess the journey would be easier to Reeds if DS does school bus and agree that St Georges is fantastic, but just a bit more difficult to get to.
Thanks all for feedback though.

RatherBeOnThePiste - thanks for that.

Academically I've just had a quick look on the BBC schools league table and Reed's is ahead of St Georges's by quite a way, especially for GCSEs.
5 A*-C GCSEs Reed's 98% St George's 47% (poss do IGCSEs?)
English Bacc Reed's 79% St George's 34% (poss do IGCSEs?)
A/AS points Reed's 874.4 St George's 861.1

Bluemarlin - I don't really know anything about St George's as it wasn't on our radar, as it were, but when we took a second look around Reed's the other week and asked about the academic side of things it did seem to me to be very well-balanced. There is a broader academic mix of boys than at some Independent schools (although they still have to pass the exam) but they still seem to achieve very good results.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 22/02/2011 12:36

St George's is co ed, and Reeds takes girls into the sixth form I believe? That might help your decision.

I think if there is that much disparity that St G's are doing IGSCE. I'm sure you could find that out on their website?

happilyconfused · 22/02/2011 15:14

I believe St G do IGCSE and all students have to do an MFL - pretty much the same in all indies. They take RS in Year 10 and a batch of them can do French early too.

Neither school hothouses and they are both great on sport. St G's facilities are almost second to none. They have great tennis coaching, a fab rowing setup and their own all weather running track.

Really it boils down to

  • Which one did DS like?
  • Will it be easy to get there for after school events / Saturday morning sport/ for when they miss the bus?

On the note of ebacc - I am not fully certain how that will be reported when in a number of schools students take subjects early. In any case it is not a real qualification just another column to put in the league tables Brew
