I believe that it covers things like nutrition and sports coaching and motivation skills. So theory and history of sports too.

Will try and quiz DS.

He did not take this but did look into it.

I don't want to ask too much because talking about GCSEs is "gay". Who knew?

I'd suggest you speak to Student Services at the school.

Our school had an Options Evening where you could go and speak to subject teachers.

GCSE Bitesize website is very informative - I just tried it. Have a look on there. It actually looks very interesting!

muddyangels123 · 15/02/2011 20:24

Thanks,ooopsadaisy
I just wanted to know what the subject entailed. So i didn't look a complete idiot at the options evening.
It's P.E or Food Tech., he doesn't want to do Food Tech.
It's only taken him 6 months to choose all his optionsShock.
He goes to Cadets, so P.E seems to tie in.

My DS is now Year 10 and we're all happy he made the right choices.

I think schools put a lot of pressure on Year 9s by telling them "it's the biggest decision you'll make" etc.

Options evening was very helpful for us and we felt able to ask all sorts of silly questions (even though DS thought we were being "gay"). Grin

muddyangels123 · 15/02/2011 20:40

My DS1 knew he wanted to go into Electronics.
So did all the maths, science subjects. Easy.Smile
DS2 until last week didn't have a clue what he wanted to do.
Teenagers don't you just love ,um.Grin

DS says his friends who took PE say "it's ok".

I think that teen-speak for "they are enjoying it".

Lilymaid · 15/02/2011 20:52

DS2 took it. Quite a lot of human biology so you should ensure that will be taught by science teacher rather than PE. You have to choose two different sports to do more detailed work on e.g. football and tennis.

muddyangels123 · 15/02/2011 20:53

Yeah, DS2 has just said the bitesize site is minted & now is sharing info. with his friends on facebook.

Thanks, lilymaid. So there is some sport.Grin

Enjoy it while it lasts.

By Year 10 Bitesize is "gay". Grin

By the way - I have told him that this expression is inappropriate and now I am using it whenever I quote him. Who is the parent here?

My DS is doing PE. There is quite a lot of sport. He is in Y11 and has just had to choose his 4 sports on which he will get asked questions and will be tested. He has to set up his own personal exercise plan PEP which is all about nutrition and exercise, setting a formal exercise plan for him, noting the goals he has set himself.

The whole group has, throughout the year, been doing circuit training and noting down their personal best times/results which have to be improved upon.

So, you can tell your DS there is quite a bit of sport involved, but there is also a lot of detailed human biology.

lazymumofteenagesons · 15/02/2011 22:52

DS2 is doing PE as described perfectly by ILove JudgeJudy.

I think as well as participating in the sport they are also tested in refereeing/umpiring. There are definitely 4 sports involved and a written paper.

The biggest laugh is that most of the boys doing this with him choose rounders as one of the sports! You can choose an outof school sport and get someone to video you.

mnistooaddictive · 16/02/2011 11:50

Lol at GCSE's being gay.

muddyangels123 · 16/02/2011 12:18

Thanks,ILJD & LMOT

He is hoping to include some of the sports he's doing at cadets/ DofE.
I will ask at the option evening in a few weeks.

I did PE at school and tbh it's a lot of biology so doing a separate biology in addition would be really beneficial.

I also did sports history, rules and exercise and nutrition.

It's a really well-rounded GCSE as it has a good combo of vocational and academic elements.

vj32 · 17/02/2011 19:06

A lot of schools now teach PE BTEC and GCSE so worth checking it is def the GCSE he would be doing.

I don't have a lot of respect for PE GCSE as my husband passed and got a B. He had to be tested on swimming and got a great grade even though he can't swim. He only had to demonstrate the correct strokes for one length of the pool - so just held his breath the entire way. Examiner didn't notice he wasn't breathing!

I would speak to the teachers that will be teaching it in school to check how much choice about sports etc he would have.

generalhaig · 17/02/2011 19:12

I think it must have changed a bit vj32 - at ds1's school only kids representing the school at A or occasionally B team level are allowed to do GCSE PE as there is a large practical element.

Ds is doing swimming as one of his sports (is a competitive swimmer so easy for him!) and he has to put in his times for different events - it's certainly not just one length of the pool ...

vj32 · 17/02/2011 19:36

I know its different... its just a joke with us. My point really was that you have to look at how the pupils are assessed and how much choice they will have to pick their assessed sports - generally this is about the specialisms of the PE teachers and facilities that are available.

Also confirm if it is GCSE with exam or BTEC - coursework only.
