Calling all teachers, is exam marking worth it?

Just asking, I have seen Edexcel advertising for markers, they dont say how much they pay per exam paper and although I desparately need extra money not sure if it worth the effort.
Anybody done it? Is it worth the hassle?
Thanks.

Yes, it's worth it as it improves your teaching no end. You are not paid per script as it is online. You are allocated a number of answers for which you are given an amount, and this is topped up by a bonus if you mark everything by the end date. You can earn more by marking more after you've completed your allocation.

My contracts for this year will pay me £962.03 (gross) for marking, and my other contract will pay me considerably more for team leading.

I have marked now for about 7 years and it is the best way to get insight into what the examiners want for your GCSE classes.

It's bloody hard work even without teaching, and I do two papers, one as a team leader, one as an examiner, but it will good on my CV when I return to teaching.

I am not sure it is worth it for the money, there are easier and less time consuming ways to earn the money.

However when coupled with how it improves your exam teaching it is worth it.

CrosswordAddict · 07/02/2011 10:31

Yes it is worth it but very intensive during the marking period.
WJEC (never done Edexcel) pay £3.30 per script and it is marked on paper.
It is quite hard to get into the swing at first and there will be a few teething troubles but I have marked now for 7 years and thoroughly enjoy it.

can I hijack this by asking a related q if anyone knows the answer - does anyone mark for the exam board that they DON'T teach? Is it useful at all from a teaching perspecitive?

I teach AQA but to mark GCSE papers would mean an overnight trip to manchester, which is a long way away for me and I will be on maternity leave with a little baby that I'm sure I won't want to leave. I was wondering about trying to mark for a london based exam board so I can do the training/meetings more locally to me but not sure if I'm making too much work for myself by getting involved with a spec I know nothing of Hmm

CrosswordAddict · 08/02/2011 09:27

Slowangels Yes, you can mark for an exam board that you don't teach and yes it would look good on the CV + also it is very good training IMO.
CAMBRIDGE Board have their meetings at Birmingham which might be easier for you, depending on your area.

slowangels1 · 08/02/2011 09:51

I'm in kent crossword and for some reason I think edexcel is london based (but may be competely wrong on that). Thanks for the info btw. Wonder if I'm too late to apply... Hmm

scaryteacher · 08/02/2011 12:12

Edexcel is London based for prestandardisation for team leaders. Standardisation is for the most part done on-line, so it matters not where you live.

I live just outside Brussels, but standardise on-line for the paper I mark, and go to London for the team leaders meeting for the other one.

slowangels1 · 08/02/2011 12:25

Darn, just checked edexcel web site and they arn't looking for examiners in my subject :(

CrosswordAddict · 08/02/2011 13:20

Slowangels In my own exam board the marking for exams in May and June this summer has already been allocated. You could try for November 2011 if that is any use.
Scaryteacher I have been marking for seven years now and would love to know how much team leaders are paid. Could you give me a rough idea? I need a bit of a push to apply I think.

scaryteacher · 08/02/2011 13:49

Gross, just over £2k including meeting fees for the pre stand in London.

abgirl · 08/02/2011 17:25

slowangels a lot of AQA subjects are now moving to online standardisation so meeting attendance now won't be necessary. What subject do you mark and I'll check what's happening with it for you? PM me if you want.

slowangels1 · 08/02/2011 17:31

oh abgirl that would be fab as I'm already on the list for marking for AQA. I teach food tech (or in AQAland it's 'D&T: Food Technology')

abgirl · 09/02/2011 15:46

Guess you mean GCSE, in which case it will definitely be on line standardisation in the summer.

slowangels1 · 09/02/2011 16:23

Yes I do, sorry. That's fabulouso. Just wondering if I'll have to go to a standardisation meeting in any case though as I've never marked for AQA before (had to pull out last year at last min due to illness).

Apologies for thread hogging OP.

abgirl · 09/02/2011 16:58

No, it'll all be OLS for new or existing examiners. Might be worth ringing your AQA contact to confirm you're still interested as you may not automatically get an allocation if you dropped out last year.
