Anyone else's DC doing Intermediate Maths Challenge today?

DD found out yesterday that she is doing this today! No info about it, she's just assuming it is similar to the Junior challenge which she did last year. She's in top set for Maths (Yr 9) and half of them were told they were doing it and the other half not. Confused

DS (yr8) came home this week saying he and one other boy from his year were going to take part in the regional maths challenge next week - I think they did some tests in school a few weeks ago, so presumably that was the pre-selection thing. School hasn't really given any information about it, except a permission slip to sign to say they can go (it's in the next county).

So it sounds like all the regional competitions are happening around now, and presumably the chosen few go through to a national event? DS seems fairly clueless...

roisin · 03/03/2011 07:28

Good luck exexpat's ds!

ds1 did this last year for the first time and had absolutely no idea about it in advance of the day, but they won the regional finals and went through to the national final in London.

Yesterday his school team (with him) won again! So he's off to London again later in the year.

there's more info here and some sample materials to show the sorts of things they do.

ds1 says team-work is really important as well as mathematical ability.

Congrats to your DS, Roisin, and thanks for the good wishes. I'll show him the link, and report back next week - I think their event is on Monday.

Anyone else get their results yet?

DS got a BronzeGrin

Lol

roisin · 04/03/2011 07:15

LOL

Actually one or two of the schools ds1 was competing against do take it very seriously and do practice/preparation for it... They came second again!

Having said that apparently the school who won the national finals last year also take it extremely seriously and do lots of preparation for the competition.

Docbunches · 04/03/2011 08:33

Well done Bruffin's DS!

My DD also achieved a Bronze award, just missing out on Silver (sorry for double post, I bumped this thread on Weds when DD got the newsGrin).

bruffin · 04/03/2011 08:55

Sorry didn't notice your post on wednesday. Congratualtions Docbunches DD.

My DS has done the maths challenge 4 times now - he's in year 10 - and got gold each time! Next week he's doing the maths olympiad paper. Don't know where he gets it from as I'm useless at maths!

He's also doing the team maths challenge (for the 3rd time) next week.

roisin · 04/03/2011 22:26

Hmm The team challenge is supposed to be for yr8& yr9 only Timetraveller? And max 2 yr9s in a team.

The older team challenge is for yr11, 12 and 13 - but that one's already happened this year, the final was in Feb.

/confused/

snorkie · 05/03/2011 00:30

There's a year 10 team challenge too roisin - run I think by the further maths network rather than ukmt but done very much on the same lines except I don't think there's a national final. ds's team won East Region when they were in year 10 I seem to remember.

dd gained a bronze on the imc and meanwhile ds managed the grand total of 1 (out of 40) on the BMO2 which we all found rather amusing (he's supposed to be good at maths). The olympiad papers really are tough, BMO2 especially so evidently! Best wishes to your ds for the Hamilton, timetraveller - is it his first olympiad paper?

roisin · 05/03/2011 04:33

I don't think it's the fmn They run the senior challenge for the UKMT for yrs 11-13.

Does anyone know about this yr10 team challenge? I'm intrigued and would like to pass on details of further maths extension opportunities to school.

snorkie · 05/03/2011 11:07

Look here roisin. A link to the pdf with guidelines is near the bottom, but no mention of a National final, so it's probably just an East Region thing.

Timetraveller · 05/03/2011 20:56

Thanks Snorkie, yes it's his first olympiad paper. Is the BMO2 the second round paper? Your DS did really well to get to that stage!

I'd assumed that the team maths challenge for year 10 was also run by the UKMT, but you're right, it's a different organisation.

I think it's great that those who really enjoy maths have these extra opportunities.

snorkie · 05/03/2011 21:53

Timetraveller, the olympiad questions are like nothing else they do at school and they need to have an idea of writing out proofs. It will be worth your ds looking at some questions in advance as it's his first time. Ds has done them every year since year 7 (at the age appropriate levels) and still finds them very tough, but I think it's excellent for the good mathematicians to be really challenged properly for a change. BMO2 is indeed the follow on from BMO1 which is the follow on from the senior challenge and it is the first time he's done it - he's hoping to improve his score next year!

Timetraveller · 05/03/2011 22:10

Snorkie, thanks for the advice. He's brought home a couple of past papers to work on, and my DH who's a mathamatician, has been looking at a couple of questions with him. He hasn't got long though as they sit the paper on the 17th.

You're right, he is being challenged which doesn't happen often.

I hope you're DS does well and is pleased with his score this time.

snorkie · 05/03/2011 23:13

Ahh - very helpful to have a parent who knows what they're talking about! They never seem to get very long to prepare unfortunately, but maybe that's a good thing, or it might get to be a chore rather than a fun challenge?

exexpat · 08/03/2011 13:00

DS's team came 6th (out of 24, I think) in the regionals yesterday - so they are not going to the finals, but not bad for a first go, and more importantly, he really enjoyed it - came back bouncing around telling me all the different questions he answered Smile.

roisin · 08/03/2011 16:04

Well done him/them exexpat - brilliant that he enjoyed himself.

busymummy3 · 11/03/2011 12:42

My DD Y9 did it in February (on her 14th birthday much to her dismay!!) and got her result yesterday she got a Bronze so proud of her!

Themumsnot · 11/03/2011 14:21

Well done to all your DC. DD's school don't seem to have given out their results yet. She is doing her KS3 Maths SAT today though, so that's quite enough to worry about. Grin
