We're in lancs and DD has just started yr 7. We examined the schools in great detail - DH enjoys doing stats on exam results.
We have no axe to grind on behalf of any as DD got into LGGS (and if you live near enough and your DS is bright enough when he gets to secondary stage, you will want to look at Lancaster Royal Grammar, the boys school. No-one who got offered a place at the Lancaster grammars in DDs primary turned it down in favour of private. Clitheroe grammar not quite so good but worth remembering if your in that direction).
So, the privates:
QEGS - not very good academically
Stoneyhurst - not good academically and stupidly expensive relative for the others. You pay for the fabulous buildings and grounds. Jesuit, which for some is a pro but in our case definite no-no.
Bolton -excellent. Obv we were looking at girls div but they are both VG. Having the boys and girls taught separately on same site is probably best of both worlds. Might not suit everyone - the mother of one of DDs classmates said she didn't like it because her lad needed somewhere where 'boys can be boys' (he went to Kirkham)
Kirkham - used to be so-so academically, but getting better of late. Very nice atmosphere.
Arnold - hm. Has good reputation, good results but it had financial difficulties and was taken over by the UCST. The headmaster has just left, think the deputy is acting HM. I think they've got problems getting enough people in. DH predicts it will become an academy before much longer, a faith one given UCST influence. Shame.
We didn't really look at KEQMS.
Finally, if you don't want to decide secondary yet, if you want a primary which has good record of getting kids into their choice of secondary, theres Highfield Priory in Preston.
