Grammar or comprehensive?

Selective grammar school with outstanding Ofsteds, 4-form entry, boys.

Comprehensive with outstanding Ofsteds, 7-form entry, mixed.

Haven't yet visited the schools, so don't yet have personal opinions on them.

So what are the benefits/disadvantages of each type of school?

Seeker if the comprehensive is a good enough school it will attract and keep those bright students. I work in a comp that is actually far more comprehensive than other schools in non grammar areas.

From my experience of working in a grammar area if I had a geeky awkward but able child I would send them to the grammar. If I had an able child I would put them in the comp as they wil recieve better teaching and facilities. I accept it may differ according to where you live. You have to make the judgement according to the child and the school

Vesp, why do you think the teaching would be better in the comp?

I know the grammar and the comp well first hand. I have friends who have children in the grammar and see what work they are set.

It will of course vary from comp to comp and grammar to grammar. You just need to be wary of assumptions.

PrettyCandles - yes, usually around 70% go to the nearby comp, about 10 - 15% to the boys or girls comps. The rest (usually only one or two in each case) go to other comps in our borough, private schools, sometimes special schools, (from the ASD resource), or schools outside the borough, including the boys' grammar and the girls' grammar in the next borough one way and the very oversubscribed Church school in the next borough the other way.
