At lunchtime - a few pupils decided they fancied learning it so one of the MFL teachers volunteered. Can't decide which is more amazing - children voting for more work or a teacher giving up their lunch hour Grin

Hope your DS enjoys it. Very impressed with the teacher giving up her time.

OrmRenewed · 23/09/2010 20:29

Yes he did thanks.

Apparently she suggested Mandarin but the children preferred Russian Grin

Impress him by saying 'privyet' (hi, in Russian)

OrmRenewed · 23/09/2010 20:34

I did GCSE Russian at school many moons ago and it was great, found it alot easier to learn than french! Did a couple of exchanges to Moscow aswell, is his passport upto date just in case? Grin

I started GCSE russian as an extra many moons ago when I was at school doing my A-levels. Despite being a good linguist (A* in french, german and latin gcse) I found it very hard! Good luck to your son!

GrendelsMum · 24/09/2010 08:47

Otlichno! Maladetz, OrmRenewed!

OrmRenewed · 24/09/2010 10:59

Erm....thanks ?

Grin

That wasn't rude was it?

I did Russian for O'level too. I really enjoyed it. Forgotten most of it now but can still say

"Boris is a tractor driver on the collective farm!. We are going to the forest to pick mushrooms.I want to go to bed with Boris." Sorted then! Grin

singersgirl · 24/09/2010 11:03

Er...is it DS1 rather than DS2? I did Russian many years ago. But if the teacher suggested Mandarin as well, does she/he actually know any Russian?

OrmRenewed · 24/09/2010 11:05

Yes! You spotted my deliberate mistake singersgirl Grin

I assume she knows Russian - be a bit pointless otherwise. Unless she thought they were going to teach her Grin

Don't worry, Orm, GrendelsMum said only nice things! 'Excellent' (Otlichno) and 'Well done' (Maladetz)

OrmRenewed · 24/09/2010 11:13

Ah! Good Grin

You can say them to your son when he comes home!

Did anyone else learn Russian with those incredibly weird videos about the alien that comes to Moscow to buy vodka and shubki?

sandripples · 24/09/2010 17:36

My DD did Russian GCSE alongside A-levels. Best thing was that they did a 2 week intensive course in Yaroslavl- arranged by the British Council. It really helped and DD got a good result.

My Russian teacher spent most of the lesson trying to convert us to The Great Cause, circa 1974!

Boris the collective tractor driver, indeed.
