the school I want to try to get him into is closed for holidays.

I suppose I just have to put it on hold until they go back? We can delay moving as we're moving into dp's house from my rented one it's just it would've been nice for him to start the year there.

Can the LA not help ? Most will work reopen a week or so before term starts or earlier if secondary (GCSE/A level results)

If its a state school you have to fill in an out of rounds admission form for the LEA - I believe they are still open throughout the holidays.

Curiousmama · 21/07/2010 18:29

Thanks for that both of you.

The LEA will be open through the holidays. And their website should have details about admissions.

It rather depends on which year group we are talking about. If it is year 7 in september then the LA is the place to go as they will be handling all the admissions for that year group. If it is years 8 to 11 in September then you still need to go to the LA but they may well be able to talk to someone at the school over the summer hols to confirm whether the school is full or not. If not then they should be able to start at same time as everybody else in September. If they are full in that year group then you will need to appeal for a place, so the sooner you get started the sooner this will be, but it is unlikely that any appeal will be before they start back in September.

It is worth emailing over the summer as people will be in. The average teacher is planning to sped 2 weeks in school this summer, some survey said this week. (There are also exam results coming out soon, and that will be followed by frantic phonecalls from Sixth formers and parents.)

dont know where you are but here you fill in an in year transfer form and send it to the local admissions dept at county. as long as you are sure it is the school you are happy with, the school has fairly minimal involvement- certainly the office staff that are in over the hols should be able to sort it out.

Hi thanks again. I rang the council today and talked to someone in admissions. He's sending me out a form and I've also got an appointment with the new school on the 6th with the plan for ds1 to start on the 7th. In the meantime I'll pop in for his uniform which isn't much different from his present one. I just need new blazer, badge, tie, pe socks and top for now. He needs a new blazer anyway.
I had to break it to ds1 that he'd need to get the school bus but he was fine. He's taking it all very well. His friends were upset when he told them but they can stay anytime and it's only 30 miles away so not too bad.
Ds2 is adamant he's staying at his school here so I have no choice but to let him as exdh will make it impossible as we share care. Ds2 is very close to ex (who has no friends nearby) they go to football etc... together. Ds2 would be in hysterics if I tried to force him to move schools. I told him he will go to the same secondary as ds1 though and he said he'd be ok with that thank goodness though time will tell.
No doubt I'll be judged but I'm just doing all I can not to upset him too much as he's so sensitive. My mum isn't happy but she's never been much help re: the boys anyway and never visits so I'll probably see more of her.

Anyway sorry for ramble and thanks for the advice
