Year 8 targets/working levels

Can anyone tell me what is the range of average or expected levels for Year 8 maths?

I am worried about dd1. Up until now we have always had glowing reports about her maths but I have just received her end of year progress report and it says she is not on track to reach her Maths target. She is only slightly below I think but even so I am baffled.

We had a letter in March saying how pleased they were with her and that she was performing really well and now a few months later this. She has also come home saying that she will be in a lower set next year.

If she is underperforming why doesn't she know abuot it coz she is baffled as well. Although she has always said she doesn't understand things with this teacher as well as last years and I don't think he is very good judging from information from other sources either.

Yes. One sub level higher. It goes 5c....5b...5a...6c...6b...6a and so on!

....I should add - expected levels are level 5 or 6 by end of year 9. There is no expected level for year 7, so you need to look at your sons target level - that was 5a and see what he achieved - 6c and so he is higher than school would have expected. He is also on course to meet national expectations of 5/6 in year 9 (hopefully he will get even higher than national expectations)

Well he didn't ring (surprise surprise) so I presented myself at the end of the school day and he did see me (but I suspect only because the messages got mixed up and he was expecting someone else, however it was too late by the time he had shaken my hand ). Says she has neither moved up nor down but they are re-arranging the sets due to it being gcse work now and set 1 comprises the 'gifted' types .

I remain unconvinced and will wait and see who is actually in the sets when school starts again. I am not saying that dd1 is in that category, she quite clearly isn't but I am just sceptical that he wasn't just fobbing me off. I did put all my points across very nicely but am unsure of his sincerity, especially judging my dd1's reaction to some of the answers. He did give dd1 a (very brief) list of areas for her to practice on and gave me an old text book and he most definitely knows who I am now (and will probably hide if he sees me coming again )

Thanks everyone for your advice/
