What would you say is the number 1 thing to do in Edinburgh?

Myself, DH and DDs (19 and 16) have 5 hours free in Edinburgh soon. We’ve been before, but
always for shopping. We’ve never done any tourism stuff. So what’s the number 1 thing to do? Open to all kinds of experiences.

Thanks so much for the suggestions

Camera obscura and st Mary’s close look great.

A few questions—

  • I went to something vaguely similar to camera obscura in NYC and it had some sections with glass floors. Is there any in camera obscura ? I’m terrified of heights!
  • are there any/many stairs in st Mary’s close?

Parts of Mary Kings close are very steep and uneven under foot. A bit claustrophobic too if you don’t like that sort of thing.

I’m a bit surprised at all the museum suggestions, fine on a rainy day but you could be anywhere. Edinburgh is a beautiful city with lots of green spaces and architecture. A walk through the New Town downhill to Stockbridge is spectacular. Cut through Inverleith park/pond and finish up at the Botanical gardens for lunch. You will see more of the city that way.

If that's meant to be funny it failed miserably.

It was actually meant as a joke but apparently 13 posters agreed with me because they reacted to it with the thumbs up emoji.

@YouBelongWithMe no it’s bloody awful! Fine for a rainy day if there’s nothing else to do.

I take it they are all Glaswegians?

I’d say one of the Underground city tours. They are so cool! Auld Reekie is one of the companies that run them, and it never disappoints

Walk around Dean village then over to the royal mile/grassmarket and just enjoy the beauty city punctuated with coffee and lunch.

I thought Mary King's Close was a bit shit.
The guide was talking in a weird children's actor voice, and it ruined it.
There was also a bit full of dolls and teddies that apparently people bring which was just weird, particularly the rasta banana toy.

I live here and I don’t think the castle itself is very interesting but I love to look at it. I tend to climb any of the hills to see the view. Calton Hill is pretty gentle and has the iconic view down Princes Street, the Forth and Leith to the other side and then a stunning view of Arthur’s Seat and the Crags. Arthur’s Seat is a more dramatic climb.

Cockburn street, Royal Mile, Victoria Street - lots of cool wee shops and restaurants etc. Water of Leith/Dean Village, Leith itself. So many gorgeous parts of the city and a little walk round the new town is nice for the architecture too.
