Fruit Trees.

I’ve just bought three from Gardening Express. Who I would recommend btw, we have so many lovely plants in our gardens that we got from them.

It was an end of planting season sale. It was a mixed luck thing.

So we got, cooking apple, crab apple and pear.

Should we plant the two apple trees together?

As long as your acreage isn't huge they won't need to be too close, I'd say within the vicinity.

Do you know what variety of crab apple it is? That might be better a wee bit closer to the house so you can watch the wildlife on it. The cooker I'd be inclined to put further back and the pear likes it a bit sheltered.

Thank you. We got them for our back garden. I’ll look at the label to see which crab apple type. I was wanting a plum tree 🤣. But happy with what we’ve got for a tenner!

Wow, that's not bad for a tenner. You might find a plum tree fairly cheaply when the supermarkets get the bareroots in, keep an eye out next year I think round about March. Good luck 🌳

The rootstock they are grafted onto will dictate their eventual size so that would determine the planting positions. What does the label say? Apples will have something like MM106.

Thank you. I am actually all chuffed. The very first we ever bought from GE was runaway bride hydrangeas. They sit in flower beds on each side of our bay window and I get pleasure from them every single time I leave the house.

I'll definately get a plum tree.

I was really pleased when I moved to my present home that there were 3 fruit trees in it.

They were really quite young trees. I don't think the previous owners were knowledge gardeners, although one of the couple was an enthusiastic one. Not that I'm that knowledgeable myself but I certainly wouldn't have planted the apple and the cherry so close together. The third tree is another apple tree planted a little apart from the other two but a little too near the house.

They do produce fruit though and the year before last I got a good crop of apples. But last year the apples got eaten on the tree by the birds and I got very few. Similarly, this year I have seen quite a few cherries starting to form but the birds have seen them too! I actually dont begrudge the birds the fruit. It's nice to eat my home grown fruit but not eating it isnt a matter of life or death for me and it's much more important for the birds to have a food supply.

I hope you get a lot of pleasure out of your trees OP. I certainly have out of mine.

You're going to have to buy a bigger boat garden @Differentforgirls 😄
