Scottish election results so far and possible coalition options

I thought it would be good to have a thread to talk about the results. Right now 108 out of 129 seats have been declared and the seats so far are:

57 SNP
13Labour
10 Reform
10 Green
9 Tories
9 Lib Democrats

It's clear the SNP will not have an overall majority and still not clear who the 2nd place party will be. I'm not really surprised by these results. I wonder who the SNP will attempt to form a coalition with. The only other Indi party are the Greens and the last coalition was a disaster with the tail wagging the dog.

I wonder if Swinney is actually going to give kids free schoolbags and tell the supermarkets what they can charge us for food.

@TheresAsilverLiningInTheSkyeeI live in the constituency where Reform lost narrowly. I don't know, nor can I think of a single person who'd vote for them.
Usually it was rank SNP with lots of abuse directed at NO voters during the referendum.

And this is the problem. We pride our selves in being a progressive democracy but we pay lip service to respecting other people’s views. And by WE I mean politicians, the press, the man in the street.
Dissent gets shouted down in Scotland so there is a growing undercurrent of people feeling our leaders don’t speak for them.
And then along comes Reform……

I hope this is the wake up call Scotland needs

I'm wondering why people keep talking about coalitions and majority. It's explicitly designed to prevent a majority - the SNP broke the system once and have governed for almost all of their 20 years as a minority government. Is it to make it seem like a failure or do people just not bother to understand what they're talking about even when it's their job to understand it?

I think they harp on about a majority because a) they got one once and b) they need something to claim a “mandate” for another referendum

Green MSP Kate Nevens wants to “abolish prisons”

wtaf are these people on?

What do we think the SNP’s plans are? Swinney doesn’t seem interested in Indy, the food price cap thing is totally unworkable so will be quietly binned too. What’s left? They have squandered all Scotland’s money away. They have no interest in improving education or helping businesses and they are trapped paying any nhs spending to already promised pay rises. They have a vast funding gap to fill.

What next?

If they got an outright majority, and they didn’t. UK are going to tell them to piss off. Why bother asking them when he doesn’t have to.

Over 10k people voted for her. Utter loons. I’m going to imagine life limited blue haired Edinburgh Uni students and pensioners with fuck all else to do.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 09/05/2026 23:36

I don't mind if the SNP go it alone or go into a coalition, which I think is unlikely. They will not work with Reform and hope they don't have anything to do with the Greens.

No, that's just the half-arsed, lazy, outrage-baiting way the media spun what she actually said, which was that in the longer term a society which gets on top of the causes of criminality will obviously simultaneously be reducing the number of criminals, the end point being a place where there is so little serious crime there is no actual need to imprison anyone.

Obviously it's an ideal and not remotely realistic, but neither was the utter shite that the media came out with implying that if she was elected she'd lobby for every prison in Scotland to be gone by 2027.

No, I’ve watched her saying it, I looked it up as I couldn’t believe it was true

I work in criminal justice so I’m pro reducing prison numbers, but her take is ludicrous

"The ultimate goal for the Greens is to not have the prison system as it is right now"

Media output - "Oh my god this mentalist is going to do away with prisons completely!!!!!!11111!!!!!! The streets will be running with criminals if you elect her!!!!!!!111111"

🤔

As I say, I looked up what she said herself rather than believing the media 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ophir · 10/05/2026 17:03

She opens by saying she’d like to see the complete abolition of the prison system in Scotland; they’re violent, they’re not safe
