Evening in Edinburgh?

I will have Tuesday evening to myself in Edinburgh. I don’t know the city at all - any suggestions? Nice restaurants, cultural things open in the evenings, or left field ideas all welcome.

I would probably go and see a film at the Everyman cinema. You can have food and drinks brought to you at your seat. It’s very nice. Not very Edinburgh specific though.

If you want to keep it low key you could eat at Bonnie & Wild then go to the Everyman Cinema, both in the St James Centre.

Or you could eat at Bonnie & Wild then go for a walk up Carlton Hill.

There are loads of organised walking tours, most start on or around the Royal Mile. I had tapas at PIGGS in Bruntsfield recently which was great and they have a place on the Royal Mile you could go to.

You could walk to Leith, lots of places to eat there, walk round and get the tram back up Leith Walk. Or walk some of the Water of Leith up to the Botanics.

Will come back when I think of other things!

Thanks both. A walk is a lovely idea! I might find a nice route for a wander until it’s dark.

I love Everyman cinemas, but go quite regularly at home.

Love the restaurant Papillo in Bruntsfield area. It’s an Italian.

Alicorn1707 · 25/04/2026 18:44

which area will you be in, approximately, @Elizabeta?

We can hone it down a little, there are infinite choices.

Fantastic city.

just adding this, in case any appeal 😊

I’ve done this! Cannot recommend more! Fabulous walk!

I would avoid Bonnie & Wild, not very good food and there are so many better places to go for food.
Where will you be?

Wander up Calton Hill. Grab a coffee at the café there.

It's not properly dark until around 9pm so plenty of time for wanderings. Maybe start at the west end, head down to Dean Village and follow the water of leith path into Stockbridge. Grab a drink there and then walk back to the city centre for dinner?
or head down the Royal Mile and walk up Calton Hill before dinner.
Mary King's close in open in an evening or you could probably find a guided walking tour

Oh no that’s a shame you didn’t like it, it’s so popular and perfect for casual solo dining.

Toppings bookshop is great , on the corner of Royal Terrace. It’s open in the evenings.

So would I. I'd avoid the entire St James' Centre and the awful Everyman cinema. It's absolutely horrible sitting next to someone noisily eating a smelly burger.
