How odd. The women's kit looks as unsporty as you could imagine, would athletes really want to wear high heels during the opening ceremony? Strange choice!

NebulousSadTimes · 16/04/2026 16:55

TeamScotland is whining about the amount of abuse the models have been getting on Twitter, completely ignoring any questions or comments about the clothes, none of which have been directed at the models, AFAICS.

"Discrimination has no place in sport or society" but it's okay to discriminate against our female athletes by putting them, probably for hours, in shoes that won't do their feet any good before their events, is it? And of course the mini skirts, because

It is not abuse to ask why or say it's not appropriate.

We seem to go at least a step further back every day.

Chewchter · 16/04/2026 17:03

Anyone that’s spent any time in heels like that won’t be able to do a substantial amount of running without damaging their Achilles. It’s why parents that put their daughters in heels are regarded as terrible.

A kilt like that looks really frumpy. If you’ve got the body of a goddess, why dress it like Mrs Doubtfire?

Classiclines · 16/04/2026 17:03

I lived in Glasgow at the time of the 2014 Commonwealth games. Although initially I wasn't enthusiastic about it being held there I ended up embracing the games and attending and enjoying quite a few events.

To me seeing the women athletes here wearing mini skirts and high heels is a total slap in the face for women's sport. It's such a throw back to women only being valued as objects and not for their talent and abilities.

I" m truly upset and bewildered as to why this is thought to be appropriate. It's a deliberate devaluing of women in sport.

At least she really is a woman

Chewchter · 16/04/2026 17:07

Now I know what her outfit reminds me of. It’s a RBS / Bank of Scotland cashier from the 1970s isn’t it?

As for the racist abuse, there aren’t many ethnic minorities involved in Scottish sport so the models aren’t really reflective of team Scotland, but if it can subconsciously encourage more ethnic minorities to get into elite sports that’s a good thing.

usedtobeaylis · 16/04/2026 17:08

That is bowfing, let's face it, and incredibly outdated. The outfits for the last games in Scotland were highly criticised too but at least just for not being particularly nice. This just looks old fashioned and like it's from some 90s porn and extremely uncomfortable.

I don't give any fucks about ethnicity or race.

Clarissaclaire · 16/04/2026 17:33

Ex athlete here. All the women I know are utterly dismayed by these outfits. These outfits are about as far removed as you could get for female athletes.
Also, why are the outfits not modelled by actual sportspeople?
Yet again Scotland appears to not support its women folk in the way that it should.

Rolling laughing at RBS cashier. Totally nailed it.

ProudAmberTurtle · 16/04/2026 17:46

Take the win - the fact it's not a bloke in a dress means they deserve a pat on the back for trying

rosycheex · 16/04/2026 17:49

They look like an advert for Darren McKeown

Absolutely.
To me, as a non athlete, it comes over as an absolutely deliberate attempt to undermine the credibility of women in sport.
I'm really angry about this and I can only imagine how you and other women athletes feel about it.

The shoes aren’t part of the outfits. They can wear whatever shoes they want. It says here there’s a longer kilt available but the shorter one is more popular.

Racist comments have been made about the models who showcased the outfits, accusing them of not being Scottish.

More popular?
Well if they say so it must be true mustn't it ?
And even if the shoes are the models own they have chosen to use the image of a mini skirt and high heels to promote the women's team.
As @Clarissaclaire said why aren't they using actual sports people to promote the outfits?

Obviously the racism from the knuckle draggers is unacceptable.

But the outfits... mix of Outlander, British Caledonian airlines cabin crew c. 1979 or Alan Cumming in the High Life, and Brigadoon. The shirts are all wrong and it looks like school uniform gone wrong. High heels are just stupid. Yes the outfits in 2014 got stick for being garish but so much more practical. And modelled by athletes.

This whole 2026 Glasgow games is shaping up to be a damp squib. Not nearly as much buzz as last time.

Is this really how women athletes are viewed at the commonwealth games?

I agree I don’t know why they haven’t used the athletes themselves. Maybe I’m imagining it but I thought when Stella McCartney designed the 2012 outfits you saw the athletes in them.
