Software engineering. dC narrowed it down to Glasgow or Strathclyde after 5 unconditional offers - which is better for future jobs?

Any ideas?

Any idea on the modules? We would look for someone who has done group work in their degree and used dev ops tools like git. Theoretical modules like algorithms are a given, it wouldn’t be a software course without it.

As an employer those wouldn't attract me in a CV. But I work for fairly large companies, maybe smaller places would be OK with that. But how long until AI takes those roles

My DS is at Strathclyde albeit studying a different type of engineering. It is a highly reputable uni with plenty of placement opportunities which enployers love. Its strapline is 'the place of useful learning' which sums it up well. Great uni and he's had a fab experience so far. Good luck to your DC making his decision.

Is this job going to exist in the future? With AI ?

Musicaltheatremum · 30/03/2026 11:50

My son did this at Dundee. Got jobs very easily initially, now the jobs market is saturated and it took him 5 months to get a job in 2024 and that was with 6 years experience. He's in London and the market has really dried up. I'm not sure how people rate Glasgow and Strathclyde. Good luck to him but he may have to think outside the box.

Is this going to be a good long term career to go into? Lots of software companies are making redundancies and not a lot of jobs going in the market. AI advances will make it worse.

The job isn't the golden path it was 10 years ago, but what job is?

AI is transforming the work, but it means young people can become relevant faster.

The bigger issue is international competition - SW is very easy to ship globally, and the qualitative differences between "the west" and "the rest" are diminishing fast, and the AI makes it even faster.

There is information on Discover Uni website on average earnings and graduate destinations 15 months post graduation for every degree programme in the UK. You will only get anecdotal information and signposting to better sources of information from Mumsnet.

There are lots of jobs that will fare better, AI will take lots of jobs but it won’t all be at once and many careers will have longer.

Thanks everyone. He’s aware that the job market is changing so is hoping to pick the course that provides a little more future proofing / employability

I don’t know much about Strathclyde (except its broad reputation of being “good for engineering”) but is there a reason he’s looking at software engineering rather than CompSci at Glasgow? I’d think the latter would give wider future options/be better regarded?

Alpacajigsaw · 09/04/2026 00:09

My son hated Glasgow, he said the computing department was terrible. He’s at Strathclyde now.

FrancisBlundy · 09/04/2026 07:29

My middle one did undergraduate at Glasgow and postgraduate at Strathclyde (business school not computing). He rated Strathclyde better in terms of employment help. They had employability modules from day 0 which you had to engage with and decent links with local companies for internships/project work.
