New area of Glasgow?

Looking to get some ideas of areas to live in, in case I'm overlooking areas unfairly. We're in East Dunbartonshire at the moment and want to upsize but struggling with the prices around here and doubt we'd get what we want (3 bed with good size living space).

Wondering if we should be looking at other areas. I know the "best" ones everyone always suggests - EDC, East Ren - but these are also the most expensive!

What about other areas that don't get mentioned - does anyone live somewhere they think is overlooked?!

Looking for:

  • decent schools (doesn't have to be highest in league tables, I didn't go to a high league table school and turned out ok)
  • Safe feeling
  • easy access to Glasgow city centre by public transport
  • activities for youngsters
  • cafe or shop nearby

Oh and looking for houses, not flats, so rules out west end / southside etc

What’s your budget and how many bedrooms?
I wouldn’t discount the southside, once you’re beyond Shawlands there’s a lot of housing stock- kings park/cathcart/simshill etc

MillicentMaybe · 14/01/2026 22:05

What’s your budget?

Lenzie is nice.

AllFadestoBlack · 14/01/2026 22:08

Ralston could be a possibility. It's not in Glasgow but near enough!

HettyMeg · 15/01/2026 08:26

Should have said budget £350k.

Have you ruled out other parts of E Dunbartonshire?
Bishopbriggs, Lenzie, Kirkintilloch?

Mammut · 16/01/2026 13:59

Plenty of houses in the Southside.

SpaceRaccoon · 16/01/2026 14:33

Is that £350K max price, so you'd be looking at less on OO? Otherwise I've seen things in Busby and Bishopriggs in your price range.

HettyMeg · 18/01/2026 10:05

Looking at OO 280-300 with a max of 350/360.

What about West Dunbartonshire?

Meeplemakeglasgow · 18/01/2026 16:38

Bishopbriggs would be my first suggestion, if you time it right you could get a 3 bed detached there within your budget.

Search sold prices for Laggan Road and Forfar Crescent for examples of this.

You could buy in Busby and parts of Clarkston, not as likely to be a detached but not impossible either.

Mearns around the Kinloch Road area would also be a good shout.

If you don’t mind being a bit further out then check houses in the Dalziel High catchment in Motherwell, great school and you’ll get a lot for your money.

Strathaven is also a nice place to live, well thought of school, but obviously more of a rural lifestyle.

Neilston would always be an Option too, semi-rural but with much better transport links than Strathaven and feeds into the Mearns high schools.

Thanks, I had never even heard of this place.

What about West Dunbartonshire?

Anywhere in particular?

Some good thoughts here, we've considered BB but also feels v competitive. Hadn't considered Neilston.

Thanks, how are the schools around there? I don't know anything about the area really but would be v convenient for southside amenities

This property is in the catchment for some of the best performing schools in Scotland and close to transport links etc. Depends on the size of your current property whether it counts as an upsize though

Your budget allows you to be competitive here, not as many properties in Bishopbriggs go for silly amounts over valuation as other ED areas.

I worked on a couple last year (conveyancer) that went for a good chunk under home report.

Neilston is a nice quiet place to stay, good regular train line that takes you through Giffnock, Muirend and the Southside before reaching central.

Depending on where the property is in the village you can also get some amazing views.
