Anyone watched this?

Firstly I thought the transformation was fabulous.

I don’t know much about Waterfoot, but surely EK, Jackton and East Paisley are very different in terms of school catchments, which is frankly why we personally live where we do. Of course we could probably double the house for the money by moving a few miles away as shown by Phil’s examples for list it.

Thirdly, they clearly have a lot of on hand family support (how else could they have done all that work with 4 kids including a baby and toddler 🤣) which even a few miles makes a huge difference to? (I assume? We’ve never had that so I’m acutely envious of both the time and childcare costs saved and always notice how those that have it totally take it for granted!)

And finally, what is that outbuilding with all the glazing in their garden, looks like a converted garage. Why was that not mentioned. Just nosey, they didn’t shy away from filming it.

I know it’s just a tv show and it’s primarily for entertainment, wondering what others thought, especially being a bit more familiar with it being in Scotland and school catchments more of a factor than England?

I wondered why they showed them house number 3, which was clearly 25%+ over budget based on the OO price. Surely a house that is 25% more than budget is always going to be a stunner in comparison.

Confused because usually they take the difference in offers system into account.

MashDown · 09/01/2026 19:51

I missed the price of the third house!

Listing price is the other major difference that’s area specific, even within scotland, which didn’t get mentioned. Tends to be around 10% under home report value, with expectations that properties will sell for 5-15% over HR. (don’t get me started on this)

Also LBTT for that price bracket much higher than equivalent stamp duty in England.
Houses they were viewing at 650k - LBTT 38k in scotland, stamp duty £22k in England.

i shudder to think how much the couple spent on 6 moves within 10 years.

They did at least cover off the LBTT/stamp duty price difference.

Budget was £650k. House 3 was OO £685k, so likely HBR valuation of £760k and sale price of up to £835k.

I was just surprised because on earlier shows they have mentioned the specifics of the system.

i shudder to think how much the couple spent on 6 moves within 10 years.

Yes! I thought that too.

Meeplemakeglasgow · 11/01/2026 00:34

There’s no shortage of people who have moved from East Ren to Jackton in search of a McMansion for half the price, a lot of them have managed to keep their children in East Ren schools (although the cynic in me doesn’t quite believe all are above board).

In primary school years there probably isn’t that much difference between Jackton and ER places like Maidenhill, both areas are affluent new build estates primarily populated by young families and are fairly isolated with local primary schools that have little social mix.

The difference only kicks in when the Jackton pupils are suddenly thrown into high school and have a bit of a culture shock,

Which is when many of them decide that a much smaller house in Eaglesham/Clarkston may be a better option after all.

EverythingIsComputer · 11/01/2026 00:59

I thought their renovations at the end made the house fantastic (was praying they panted the outside of the house too!), I missed the start so didn’t see if it mentioned what businesses they ran, was she involved with interiors as she had a great eye for design?

MashDown · 11/01/2026 10:36

I’m pretty sure the program didn’t elaborate more than ‘business owners’.

She certainly had a really nice natural style.

We’re in the other East, East Dunbartonshire, and know a few people who’ve managed easy placing requests for primary but moved when kids in upper primary to ensure secondary places. Don’t yet know of anyone anecdotally who’s moved once kids are in the secondary school of preference.

I do feel for some of our kids friends who have managed to get placing requests but can never hang out after school etc as they live too far away, I don’t know if the difference between one secondary to another is really worth that (despite us choosing to live where we do precisely because of school catchment, if that makes sense).

I haven't seen the programme because I am currently out of the country on holiday but I am familiar with schools in South Lanarkshire, Glasgow and East Renfrewshire. Many years ago I knew a family who moved from South Lanarkshire's Trinity High catchment to St Ninian's catchment in East Renfrewshire because of schooling.
An unplanned pregnancy resulted in twins and as a family of 7 they moved to a 3 bedroom house which they planned to extend. The parents knew that with 5 children they weren't going to be able to offer the educational support that would be needed if they stayed where they were.

I haven’t seen this and would like to watch but having trouble finding it - could you let me know which series it is please?

I didnt realise it was back, and a Scottish episode to boot! The extension was stunning but I was a bit shocked at how much they cost just now. Their garden was incredible, can't believe it was still so big even with that massive extension! I would absolutely have been staying put too. The sliding doors thing was interesting, we were thinking about bifolds but actually loved theirs and cheaper is definitely appealling. Totally agree about viewing houses in different catchments, lbtt and school catchment are such a different beast in Scotland!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 11/01/2026 21:22

Just watched it. Love what they did with the house and what a garden!

I do t know what the fuck Phil was thinking with the houses he showed them. Why the fuck would you move from east ren to Paisley?

as DH said, had Phil forgotten the title of their previous tv show, Location, Location, Location!!?!

Meeplemakeglasgow · 12/01/2026 10:56

Think the issue would have been that there isn’t really anywhere in that side of East Ren that would have improved their living space/situation within their budget.

They could have bought like for like where they are but there would be no point in that, houses the size they are looking for are more expensive in Clarkston/NM and in Giffnock you’d be realistically looking at a 3 bed semi or a much smaller bungalow.

So the only option they had to provide a bit of entertainment was to go outside East Ren.

As far as I’m aware he runs PT from the outbuilding. She owns a successful beauty/tan salon

Gosh, it must be the most lucrative PT and beauty businesses around! I’m clearly in the wrong industry.

I was puzzled as to why they didn’t just hire an architect to design a rear extension, as it was fairly obvious what the house needed - large kitchen/living space with additional shower room and utility, facing /opening into the garden.

Chance to be on the telly perhaps?

Ha, that’ll be it!
I love watching the shows, but would HATE being the subject of one.

Zooeymither · 28/01/2026 18:45

I enjoyed seeing an ‘evolving’ blended family on the show too, it was very relatable in that sense.
