Have you stayed at The Fife Arms

Was it worth it? Looking to book a special few days away for Dh and I. Also interested in Prestonfield. We have done Gleneagles, a few places on Skye whose names escape me at the moment. I like that country house vibe. What about Torridon?

Fife Arms does not have a country house vibe. Torridon is a lot nicer and more relaxing. Fife Arms has excellent art.

I haven’t stayed there, have you seen the prices!?, but have had lunch there. The food was okay, definitely not worth the price tag though.

I've stayed at the prestonfield on a B&B and dinner basis. The food was glorious but the rooms, though decorated quite nicely and appropriate to the age of the property, were quite poky. It's also a fair bit out of town but I guess you'll know that.

The Fife Arms is great for a once in a life time visit.
Food was good but hard for any restaurant to live up to those prices. Trumps Turnberry has nice sea views and golf course Food good but that was a few years ago.
edit more Edwardian mansion than country house

Prestonfield is lovely. Food was great. Drinks were eyewateringly expensive. Cheapest wine was £54!!! We were bought dinner for 2 by a group of 5 friends for our wedding 3 years ago. They also gave us a money voucher for the hotel for £45. I thought that would cover drinks but it was a lot more!

You need a taxi to get anywhere from prestonfield as it's a long walk to the bus stop but very peaceful

Have a look at Glenapp castle. I went there with DH for our 40th wedding anniversary. The food was amazing.

Belindabelle · 09/01/2026 22:14

Thanks everyone. Fife Arms is expensive isn’t it. I mean you spend 7 hours asleep. I always think you need 2 nights to fully appreciate a hotel. Hadn’t thought about Glenapp, I will look into that.

Crossbasket Castle, Kinloch House Hotel, Fonab and Rufflets are my favourites.

JacknDiane · 11/01/2026 19:41

I would give my right arm to stay at the Fife Arms

TrainerBees · 11/01/2026 19:49

There’s the Andy Murray one in Fife. Cromlix. That’s quite nice.

There’s the Andy Murray one in Fife. Cromlix. That’s quite nice.

Cromlix isn't in Fife, It's near Dunblane.

Not really. I used to live in Dunblane and now live in Fife. Not really close at all!

Fife arms is great. If you can’t stay there overnight book breakfast, it’s very good.

If you’re up for something quirky Torridon Estate is a lot of fun. It’s a B&B rather than a slick hotel but the building is enormous and very curious, the rooms are great and the setting is magical, right on the loch. It’s about a third of the price of the Torridon hotel too.

JacknDiane · 12/01/2026 09:40

The pier house in Appin looks just gorgeous

ChilledProsecco · 12/01/2026 13:50

Just remembered Greywalls & Archerfield in East Lothian

TartanTwit · 12/01/2026 13:53

We had lunch and a dram there, the prices for a stay are serious piss taking territory however. How can a bed for the night actually be worth all those £1000s?! Even if I won the lottery I wouldn't bother.

TartanTwit · 12/01/2026 14:03

Dalmunzie Castle up the road is quite fun if a bit chaotic. Go for the rooms with a chaise longue, others are a bit poky.

We stayed at this gorgeous cottage on the edge of Braemar https://www.unique-cottages.co.uk/cottages/highlands/aberdeen-morayshire/bx4-cranford-cottage?searchId=2a3107b4-4cdd-455d-afa3-f3c37bb30036. A week in November cost the same as one night in the cheapest room at the Fife Arms. We went for dinner a couple of times - food is good and not outrageously priced although drinks are expensive- and I stared a lot at who was staying there, mostly Asian and American tourists it looked like. I think at that price point it would have to be absolutely amazing and I suspected it wouldn’t live up to the cost for me. Oh also enjoyed a laugh online with my boss about the ridiculous gift shop prices- over £1000 for a hand crafted advent calendar that you could probably get from Etsy for a tenth of the cost.

Sorry I have talked a lot about price and cost but my gut is it’s somewhere to go if money doesn’t matter to you.
