Where could I move near(ish) Glasgow?

On a very limited budget, around 200k for 2-3 bedrooms. Could possibly stretch to a bit more but not much.

Schools are a top priority. As much as I’d love the obvious East Renfrewshire/East Dunbartonshire towns, they’re just not within my budget. So basically, looking for tips on the best school catchments I can afford.

Willing to compromise quite a bit on other things. The only non-negotiables are commutable distance to Glasgow (max 1h), no rough areas and no flats. Don’t mind if it’s city/town/rural.

Nice to have but not essential: a couple of decent local shops/pubs/cafes and a train station within a few miles.

Where do I look? Or should I just accept that I’m out of luck?

This is a mile and a half outside strathaven which is a great wee town with loads in it. And strathaven has a direct bus to George Sq. About 40 mins.
Sandors has a primary school and feeds into Strathaven academy.

Strathaven academy is very good!

Wheredoesthetime · 19/12/2025 15:04

Erskine would be within budget and the schools here are really good. Train station in bishopton which is about 8/9 min drive roughly.

we bought out 3 bed for £140k in 2024

Wow, thanks so much everyone!

Motherwell is a great shout, I hadn’t thought of that. Strathaven as well - and it’s good to know the surrounding villages are all right too as the town itself can be a bit more expensive.

Lenzie and Clarkston would both be ideal but houses there tend to sell 20-30% above asking so I’d struggle to make a serious offer, sadly. Someone I spoke to recently mentioned Lennoxtown for the Lenzie catchment but I’ve heard it can be a bit rough?

I like the idea of both Erskine and Prestwick/Ayr (extra points for the coastal scenery). However, I’ve heard mixed things about the schools there. @Wheredoesthetime and @SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease can you tell me a bit more about them - which ones are good, which ones to avoid and why?

Thanks so much for all the suggestions, this is really helpful.

This one is another village outside strathaven that feeds into Strathaven academy. If you don’t mind a bit of a project this could be a cracking house. Chapelton has a primary school, shop, a pub, bowling club, golf range/small course/foot golf/cafe. 5 mins outside strathaven.

Another vote for Erskine/Bishopton

Mine were/are at Park Mains and did absolutely amazingly as have all their friends. They couldn’t have done any better in a so called “better” school

Head teacher is very committed to increasing attainment and doing really well as far as I can see.

I would look for somewhere in Milngavie. It is doable and Douglas academy is a really solid school choice.

Bingosbongo · 21/12/2025 10:58

Motherwell is a good option. For primary schools look for houses in either Knowetop catchment or Ladywell primary and then obviously Dalziel High school as someone else mentioned. Around about barons haugh is a good area and some decently priced ex council houses. Also near airbles station direct into Glasgow.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Hamilton. Also some decent primary schools. If your not worried about denominational schools then St Mary’s primary and Holy cross high school are also good schools.

Pepperama · 28/12/2025 10:00

There are a lot of different price ranges in the ‘obvious East Dun’ places. Cheaper parts of Milngavie, Bishopsbriggs and Lenzie could be possible for a 2-bedroom semi around £200/250k. Definitely good schools and within the 1hour radius. You’re right about 20% above asking price but there’s always some that need a bit of work because they’re outdated and they don’t tend to go for as much.

LorettaY · 28/12/2025 14:26

I grew up in East Kilbride and I imagine you’d easily get something within budget. I can’t say it was a mega exciting place to grow up but it was safe and Glasgow is a 30 min train ride away.

Sorry just seen your question - Alloway, Heathfield, Forehill, Holmston, Symington, Glenburn and Troon Primary all rate well in our friendship circle. St John’s, Newton, Dalmilling, Doonfoot and St Patrick’s would be on my avoid list.

That’s so helpful, thanks! Any tips on secondaries? I’m hoping that this will be my last move in a very long while so trying to think ahead as much as possible.

Busby added to the list, thank you!

Also happy with a fixer upper (within reason - I won’t have the budget for any major work but could manage minor updates and decorating). I’ll definitely keep an eye on the East Dun areas mentioned in case I do get lucky.

@LorettaY what schools in EK would you say are the best? I’ve had a look at the league tables (I know they don’t tell the whole story but it’s all I have to go by without recommendations or personal experience). It seems that the highest ranking ones are RC. I don’t mind denominational but am wondering, what are the chances of getting a place for non-RC kids?

Kyle and Belmont for Ayr, Prestwick Academy or Marr in Troon are all schools I would (and in some cases have sent) send my DC to. I would avoid Ayr Academy and Queen Margaret personally.

With regard to a denominational school if you are in the often very wide catchment there tends to be no issue.

Have a look at Uddingston - good schools there, lovely little village only 15 mins into Glasgow on train. Or Falkirk area possibly? Larbert is nice and I think about half an hour from Glasgow.

Coffeeandallthebooks · 31/12/2025 18:38

I live in EK, and my kids go/went to Calderglen.
I would say it and Duncanrig are both reasonable schools, despite having middling positions in the league tables.
Calderglen has a good culture and engages with parents, a daily communication summary is emailed to you, they are responsive to communication and parents evenings are informative.
My DD is 6th year and has had lots of help with her UCAS application, she has offers back already.
DS1 had difficulty with his handwriting and a teacher advocated for him to sit exams on a laptop. His results improved and he got into Glasgow Uni last year.

So I would recommend Calderglen, and EK, if you decide it suits. Good luck with your move!

LorettaY · 31/12/2025 18:50

@Coffeeandallthebooks I’d echo this poster, I went to Duncanrig (and apparently they’re one of the top schools in EK now) and I know a few folk who went to Calderglen. Positive experiences!
