Is Flu Rife in Scotland this December?

As the title says...
Media reports on flu in Scotland suggest it is rife and increasing rapidly in the hospital population. Masks now worn in many areas to try to curb infection rates.

Is this your experience?
Personally, I think the vaccination programme should have started earlier( eg late August/ early September). This could have given more protection to those vulnerable to infection.
December is far too late to vaccinate care home residents.

There’s been a fair few viruses knocking about a combo of stomach bug/ flu / covid. I’d agree with you about immunisations, dc were vaccinated at school today and given it takes weeks to become effective then it’ll be January for 30% effectiveness. Possibly so late as prioritising elderly?

I had to pay for it privately which I have no issue with, the problem was loads of places did not have it as stock had run out. There was a drop in clinic literally 2 mins along the road from me but you couldn’t pay there . Why are the government so short sighted on this when they could easily have a card machine there for the.£20 payemnt . Surely the idea is to vaccinate as many that want done !.

In Scotland. I’m very ill (not flu) so had to call GP this morning and despite calling at 9, I was the EIGHTEENTH person on hold! (Before this, I’d never been more than the fourth person on hold). The nearest “emergency” appointment the doctor could give me was Wednesday morning. It’s actually funny, because I’ve been quarantined for about two weeks, and if I hadn’t been, I might have caught this flu. I think I should probably wear a mask to the doctor on Wednesday, because if I catch this weird flu after already being sick for a month, it would be very, very bad news.

Just been chatting to a friend from Perth area who had flu vaccine recently. Nurse told her several care/ nursing homes are full of residents with flu.
Interested in statistics when flu prevalence is discussed...do people only get tested if in hospital? Is this then extrapolated to wider population?
Most people with flu will manage it at home with no medical intervention.

Some NHS now been told to WFH eg IT/Pay due flu concern.

Healthcare/GP premises staff all wearing masks. Patients may be asked to wear one.

Broughty Ferry here. You describe exactly what I am recovering from, it has lasted more than two weeks and I have never been so unwell in my life. GP tells me he has seen several people with the same. I had a flu vaccine back in October.

Fundays12 · 16/12/2025 11:54

Its pretty rife in certain areas of Scotland. My own kids have been really unwell with it as have me and dh. I know people who are very ill in hospital and loads of kids i know have been unwell

Ineedcoffeenow · 16/12/2025 12:54

I’m just getting over it. DD caught it at uni. Not got any statistics, but I have heard of so many others getting it on a scale I haven’t heard of in previous years. It’s been as bad for me as Covid was.

ThatHazelSnail · 16/12/2025 13:05

It’s been going around for a few months it feels like, since October at least! Apparently part of the problem this year is a variant that appeared too late to be included in this years vaccine (UK wide).

IsThisLifeNow · 16/12/2025 13:28

yup, I don't think the flu vaccine is very good this year, they ,maybe got the strain wrong. But there is are also loads of Norovirus cases around too!

yellowbe · 16/12/2025 13:29

I think so I've been ill for close to 3 weeks, I am feeling a bit better now but I am still run down and can't face the masses of stuff I still need to do pre-christmas, wake me up when it's all over!

LoopyGremlin · 16/12/2025 21:08

I wanted a flu vaccine but it seems there are none available privately.

I bought mine at the local Boots pharmacy. Booked an appointment. £25 I think it was - not sure.
