Both my boys are suffering hair loss, one since he was 15, he's on minoxidil. The other is 18 and I think might be starting. He has long hair so it's more difficult to tell. I would like him to be tested to see if it is mpb. Do I look for a private dermatologist or a trichologist. Any suggestions or recommendations for Edinburgh or Lothian/Borders area? Maybe start with GP?

ds went to a dermatologist (Ross Hall in Glasgow) when he was 14-15 (through my work private healthcare). She looked at his blood tests from the GP and hair under a big microscope and said she could tell it was just early male pattern baldness and not much could be done.

Prescribed topical minoxidil and Nizoral shampoo, advised against hormones as too many downsides when they are young (can't remember what they were) discussed cosmetic options (hair fibers/coloured dry shampoo) which ds said no way. Other option when older, if it still bothered him was hair transplants etc but they were very invasive.

He tried minoxidil for a while but didn't keep up, but what did make a huge difference (once he got used to it) was a short cut, hair definitely looked thicker and now he gets it cut every 4-5 weeks to keep short and we barely notice, it does look straggly/patchy again when he misses a couple of weeks.

Thanks, I will look into Ross hall, I'm not sure my medical insurance would cover hair loss, but I can ask.

I know it’s not what you asked but I would maybe try an online dermatology/trichology service like Hair and Me. They prescribe oral minoxidil and spironolactone and similar depending on the problem. I haven’t tried them but I use Dermatica which is a similar service for skin issues. https://www.hairandme.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Brand&utm_content=&utm_term=hair+and+me&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21839199112&gbraid=0AAAAA91F7iJI7RSl90nKanwAbomZ8mE-Z&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6oWpocGFkQMVWppQBh13YBWPEAAYASAAEgJ1g_D_BwE&promocode=HGBRANDHP1

Update: my insurance covered a dermatologist and we luckily got a cancellation so were seen quickly, though we had to drive to Glasgow.. Unfortunately despite being very nice chap, he was unsure if it was retrograde alopecia or just normal hair pattern. He referred us on to a colleague, in Edinburgh , which I was amazed insurance agreed to cover, but she is very busy and no appointments til November. It seems she is the hair expert in Scotland. However I have decided in meantime to go to a trichologist in Edinburgh and just pay for the consultation. This guy is registered trichologist, which means he studied for four years. So we will see what he says.

@swaninbaywho is the hair loss specialist? Is it Susan Holmes. My online research says she’s great but not sure if no availability or stopped doing private appointments. She runs a hair clinic in the Royal in Glasgow. My daughter has recently developed alopecia and I’m feeling helpless. We have a trichologist appointment next week. I can’t even get a Gp appointment yet which is crazy. Nurse agreed to blood tests which came back ‘normal’
My research says she may not qualify for nhs referral until 50% off. At present I’d say it’s 30% loss.

Her name is Megan Mowbray. I wasn't sure if we were allowed to put up names. I'm sorry to hear of your daughter's hair loss, that must be difficult. Make sure the trichologist is registered, that means they have studied. I just googled Susan Holmes, she does look really good if you can get to see her.
