Recently had two bathrooms done, couple of the guys really grafted. We gave them £50 tip each. They were delighted.

Thankyou! Sounds fair to me - I’d be delighted too!

My husband works for himself as a heating engineer and he’s well chuffed with lots of brews and biscuits but it makes his day when he gets a £20 tip .

My goodness.

I'm happy to provide tea and coffee and biscuits but I've never even thought about tipping tradesmen!

Apart from.removal men which I thought that was a long standing tradition

When did tipping tradesmen working in the home become a thing?

We have done a full home renovation (bathroom, kitchen, built in cupboards, plastering, decorating, electrics - the works!) and we only tipped once.

Having had so many tradesmen through, it was so clear this set of decorators had gone above and being. I would not tip as standard, but we gave £20 x3 to the apprentices who were there about half the time and £50 x2 to the guys that did the bulk of the work on this occasion.

OP - I think £50 is generous, but good tradesmen are hard to find. £100 might be warranted!

Cuddleswithkids · 07/11/2025 17:17

Thanks guys, we gave them 50 each which they refused until I said put it towards your Xmas drinks with everyone else that came.
they did go the extra mile and we’re here 3-4 days
but the electrician they sub contracted was a character out of dickens with a wide eyed young little apprentice who did the actual work. I didn’t like the way dickens man hovered around and was creepily keen once he sniffed money. No tip for him!
I don’t think it’s normal to tip - we are paying the company, certainly hope it doesn’t become a thing. I hate tipping hairdressers for example - it already costs a fortune and I find it really embarrassing to know how much who too etc. just want a haircut!

I've never tipped a tradesman - judging by the tales of their exotic holidays they all earn considerably more than we do, so it just wouldn't occur to me! I hope it doesn't become a thing.

I'll give a tradesman a tip. Turn up on time, work the full day that I'm paying you for and you might get used again or recommended.

Cuddleswithkids · 04/12/2025 07:06

Don’t worry thegirlonthelanding I’ll never tip again! Hubby was brought up in nyc and thinks everyone needs enormous tips. And you are right, given the enormous amount they charge- what is it with that? Never again!

I tipped our movers - they were unbelievably kind and went way beyond what we’d expected. We didn’t pay for extras but they put our kids beds together and got it set up for which was lovely of them. Have never tipped other workmen but often something hasn’t gone quite right anyway so maybe I was just surprised!
