.Gov website states minimum of 5 subjects however DS is adamant there are kids at his school studying only 2-3 subjects…I’ve emailed school for confirmation but they’re not the quickest! Anyone have knowledge or experience of this?

My DD did 4 Highers in S5, finished school at the end of S5 and is now studying English at Aberdeen having received offers from Edinburgh, Stirling and Dundee as well. No issues at all with taking 4 unless you want to study a competitive subject at a highly ranked university.

My middle one similar. 4 Hs in S5 and went to Glasgow Uni to study a science at the end of S5. No English H as he couldn't be arsed. He graduated in 2021 but I checked and Glasgow are still showing 4Hs in the entry requirements. Out of my 3 he earns the most as a graduate so not effected his employability. He works just over the border and they frequently mistake Hs for A Levels.

My dc started s5 with 5 highers...by Xmas it was very apparent one was going to be a huge struggle...they were allowed to drop to 4, gave them more time to focus, came away with AABB and no issues getting into uni

SEN kids who have no prospect of ever becoming employable

Sorry, what?

Young people sitting highers, but who will never be employable? Are you for real?

Alpacajigsaw · 31/10/2025 15:04

My eldest did 5 highers in s5 and then 2 highers and 2 AH in s6
my youngest (ASD) did 3 highers in s5, a L5 and a L6 and he’s in s6 now doing 3 highers and a L6

So they had to do 5 subjects in s5, 4 in s6, but they might not all have been highers or AH.

There probably are SEN kids who have no prospect of ever becoming employable

you sound nice

I have a sen child who got all high A1’s for Nat 5’s. His lowest grade was 92%. Something tells me he’ll be employable. I’d be surprised if there are many doing maths at Oxbridge who aren’t autistic for example.
