My child has a YS card from argyle and bute council, but we live now in an area cover by Glasgow City Council.
Do I have to change the card? Any benefits? Is the service on the subway in Glasgow free for under 22s?

Thanks

Subway isn’t free unfortunately with a Young Scot Card. my DDs card is from a different local authority from where she is living now and she doesn’t have any issues

Thank you very much for your reply.

I think benefits are dictated by Council area so you’d need to check for your new area. We’re Edinburgh and DS gets free tram travel (as do I as over 50).

Free tram travel for over 50? Is that right or a typo?

No typo, I was a bit dubious when I first found out about it too but it’s right enough. I use mine all the time, includes airport journeys too. You need to be an Edinburgh resident.

@Mum2Fergus- thanks! Interesting reading. I’m just outside Edinburgh so technically under Midlothian Council so prob not available to me! And after all these years I’ve never actually been on a tram in Edinburgh yet 🤣 I just assumed nowt was free until you get to 60 (or is it 65) for the free bus/travel pass. Thanks for the link!

I’m officially West Lothian with an EH postcode and got one, I’d apply and see what happens. I love the tram lol x

@Mum2Fergus I still don’t understand about free tram travel for over 50’s. The way I read it you have to have a NEC but to get one you need to meet criteria which are being under 22, having a disability or being over 60? I am happy to be wrong! I just can’t see it! Thanks

When you go to the card application website it ask s you for your postcode and your age, it will then show you what card you are eligible for.

I don’t understand how the tram is free for over 50’s either. I couldn’t get a NEC until I was 60. On the Edinburgh NEC website it says you can’t apply more than 14 days before your 60th birthday. A link to where Uber 50s can apply would be useful, DH could apply.

Groovee · 25/10/2025 14:53

I have an NEC card for Edinburgh due to my disability with +1, but it’s 60 before you get the free one for buses and trams.

Mum2Fergus · 25/10/2025 16:33

I’m not quite sure how else to put it…if you are resident in a property that comes under Edinburgh Council and apply for a NEC, then as an over 50 year old you are entitled to free tram travel.

Ive been using mine for over 3 years now.

The links you are posting all say over 60...

Are you sure there isn't another factor entitled you to free travel?

How do you get an NEC if you are in your fifties when all of the links you have given are for over 60s? All Edinburgh NECs give free tram travel including those for disabled people and companions who can get them at any age. Your live chat doesn’t explain how to get an NEC.
