Have anyone’s DC studied or are studying this? My son’s interested in applying for this- specifically the design side rather than the programming side. Things like game ideas/rules/characters/quests/levels- nothing that involves good drawing skills but is great at ideas/imagination. Any jobs in this? Any thoughts?

Has he looked at Abertay? They are well known for this and have good career links.

He likes the sound of that one too and will consider it but he thinks he would rather stay at home just now.

Family member did similar course at another uni. It’s very difficult to get into gaming industry and most of them end up doing other sorts of computing jobs!
If he seriously wants to go into gaming then it has to be Abertay. They have all the industry connections with the Dundee gaming companies for placements, workshops etc. I doubt he’ll get the same opportunity at Caledonian

KingCatMeowInSpace · 05/10/2025 17:55

Yes I agree but he said he wants to stay home so I said I’d look into Caledonian as an option - worried about it not being Dundee though as that seems to be the place to be from what I hear.

He could do a games development qualification at college in Glasgow instead of sixth year at school and then go to Abertay if he feels a bit more independent by then.

KingCatMeowInSpace · 05/10/2025 18:50

@Wbeezertrue - Could think about that as an option. Only concern would be that he wouldn’t then get the grades from S6 he would have got so wil then limit options if doesn’t go into games development after the college course. Hmm - difficult

UWS do it as well, different pathways for coding and design. My youngest was interested but I think he worries about the job market so planning a different course now.

KingCatMeowInSpace · 07/10/2025 19:30

@DramaLlamacchiato yes I’m worried about the job market too - he’d love the course but if unlikely to be many jobs and lots of people all going for them then maybe he should forget it and choose an alternative career where there’s more definite jobs afterwards.
