Should I move back to Glasgow?

I lived in Glasgow in my mid 20s and 30s for 12 years after university elsewhere and was really happy. I've lived in Edinburgh for the last 15 years. I feel settled, but have never properly settled. I work in the centre of Edinburgh near Haymarket and am in the office one or two days a week.

I'm thinking about moving back to Glasgow - maybe Bearsden or Milngavie. It's hard though to reason whether am I trying to regain my youth or was I really more happy there? I'm not particularly happy at the moment and feel a bit isolated but not sure if its Edinburgh or me. I hear Glasgow has changed in the last 15 years. I will have a long commute a few days a week.

Has anyone made a similar move. I feel like I need a life reset. DC have left school now.

I'm a lot older than you . I moved to Glasgow when I married and stayed there 40 years. It took me ages to settle but I eventually loved the city and loved living there.
Then 10 years ago after I was widowed and my son moved to Edinburgh for his job I moved to South Ayrshire. I occasionally still visit Glasgow but when I do I struggle to remember the chunk of my life that I spent there and the affection I felt for it. I find it quite depressing and down trodden now, especially the city centre. I haven't been out to Bearsden for a while though - my son went to school there - so I can't comment on that.
My son still visits Glasgow and has friends there. . But as a proud Weegie who originally really hated the thought of moving to Edinburgh he now loves it and , like me , wouldn't go back to living in Glasgow.

Where are you friends/family? I’d always consider that you might struggle to find the same over the other end.

even though it’s not THAT far- it’s still a barrier for social stuff.

maybe rent for a month or two- don’t give up your life in Edinburgh. Come try it on for size.

Beaarsden said Milngavie are much much busier than they used to be. They’re excellent for supermarkets and cafes. And great for getting out to lovely countryside.
Lenzie is much smaller but has a similar vibe -rubbish for shops and cafes though. Property is slightly cheaper. It has better transport links - some of the trains to Edinburgh are direct and the trains into Glasgow are significantly quicker. And it’s very convenient for the M80.

The centre of Glasgow has become quite scruffy. Sauchiehall street now features boarded up shops and the school of Art is literally propped up after the second fire.

Public transport is generally not as good as in Edinburgh.

DH and I moved about half an hour away from our previous home while our younger DC was at uni. I was glad we hadn’t moved further away as we were still close enough for him to see his friends fairly easily.

I was in Glasgow in the 90s and loved it - it had been revamped prior to that, but it does seem to have slumped a bit since then. The City Centre and West end scruffier and less vibrant than they were.
