Scottish Household Survey

Anyone taking part in this? I did, this morning, and I wish I hadn’t. It felt like a complete waste of time. I couldn’t find much relevance to my day-to-day life, and I doubt anything I said will make any difference to my experience of public services.

I have plenty of concerns, but mostly don’t know who to take them to. Or feel ignored when I do.

Just wanted to get this out there.

I have very effective local politicians. I raise an issue, it’s addressed. Find the best MP/MSP/councillor in your local area and raise your concerns.

Another "consultation" costing how much?

MiddleAgedDread · 12/09/2025 09:29

never even heard of it, what is it?

Me neither. Is there a link to it?

AuldWeegie · 12/09/2025 10:22

Google Scottish Household Survey and it’ll come up.

There was a thread recently about the amount being spent on polling. This survey might be part of the polling. It’s “to understand the needs of the people of Scotland, and to make sure money is spent in the right places and in the most effective way”

Then you’re invited to make a date to have someone walk through your house and assess its condition.

Thinking about it after, probably they had already decided how the money would be spent. The questions and ratings seemed constructed in a way that would prevent unwanted sunjects being raised.

For instance, I have several issues with school and social services that I would like to raise, but those topics were bundled up in a way that avoided any nuance in my response.

Had I been able to read through the questions beforehand, I would almost certainly have declined the survey. But the wording in the introductory letter made me think that I might have something useful to say. Makes me feel a right mug tbh.

And apparently insisting that it take place in my home is “the gold standard” of surveys.

I’ve turned down the offer of a walkthrough to assess the condition of the house.

Why on earth would they want to walk through your house, other than to increase the council tax if it is in a good condition and has been improved in size?

Coffeeishot · 12/09/2025 10:35

Is that the 2 part Survey that came in the post?

blondebombsite13 · 12/09/2025 10:47

I don’t understand the “walk through your house to assess the condition”

Whats that got to do with anything?

Have you perhaps misunderstood this part?

If not, could you explain it a bit better please?

I didn’t misunderstand. These are the exact words they used “The research also involves a follow-up visit by an Ipsos surveyor to assess the condition and energy efficiency of your home”.

I did ask, and it wasn’t simply about whether there’s double glazing and good insulation. It would include going through the house and into rooms. I had a phone call this morning to arrange a date, and I asked specifically about this assessment and it was confirmed that it would be as I have described. That was the point at which I cancelled.

I don't mind doing a survey but nobody's walking through my home so I won't bother!

Coffeeishot · 12/09/2025 10:35

Is that the 2 part Survey that came in the post?

I think so. It lists Step 1 and Step 2. Addressed to The Householder.

Yeah i didn't do the second part such a faff. I don't know if its supposed to be the Scottish census wrapped up in another name,

Well yes. It was all just far too wide-ranging for me to be comfortable with.

And of course after confirming name, age, address, etc it started off with a trans question then what was my sexuality.

wtf has that got to do with winter fuel allowance and how much time I spend driving?

.

OP posts:
Coffeeishot · 12/09/2025 11:39

It is a census for statistics thats why they ask about sexuality/identity so they can provide information of people living in Scotland,

That makes sense.

Just wish I didn’t feel so stupid, thinking I had something helpful to say.

As I said it was such a faff I didn't even bother with part 2.

It is not the census. The defining point of a census is everyone does it - except that was another thing the Scottish Government mucked up just to be different to England so the results were pretty valueless. This is a survey.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 12/09/2025 19:07

And there were huge numbers of people who refused to complete the census last time anyway. 89% completion rate compared with 97% in England and Wales. Glasgow city under 85%.

So they are snookered because they have fucked up the census which should have given them this info. And now relying on people being happy to let the Scottish government traipse around their house with vague explanations of what they are looking for and why.

Total waste of money.

We've been invited to do this. The letter makes it sound obligatory. Is it? Like fuck anyone is walking round my house!

EBoo80 · 15/09/2025 22:10

It is an important research survey which is longitudinal, and was established long before the SNP were in charge. You can choose not to do it, of course! But it’s nothing to do with polling.
It provides good evidence of things like people living in overcrowded or substandard accommodation, which is very hard to get through other statistics.
