Edinburgh Tram Consultation

Any Edinburgh locals been following the latest tram plans from the Council? They’re consulting on a new tram line from Granton through town and out to the Bioquarter. At a cost of 3bn which they don’t know where the money will come from.

Not sure how I feel about this, can maybe see the point of a tram south to the RIE but not really the rest of it. The route they want to use in the north also involves cutting down 3000 trees and destroying a lovely off road walking/cycling route.

I never really use the trams, maybe to get to the airport occasionally but even then the bus is quicker from where I live. Edinburgh council seems obsessed by them though! Can't help thinking what else that £3bn would fund across the city....

Crazy expensive consultation on an even more crazy and expensive proposal. You have to laugh really. It’s not worth the money, even if we had the money which we don’t…

So true - they've spent over £1.1 million on this consultation so far, and the business case for the next phase is stated to be £44 million. Just for paperwork. All that money gone on consultants when the council has shut down mental health services, can't fix the RAAC in libraries or afford enough teaching assistants. It's so ridiculous.
I really hope they listen to people's views on this and consider priorities.

Whenever a tram passes me I've seen that they are completely rammed.

Not what I'd choose over a bus.

I think this is classic Edinburgh Coucil deciding something and then just going ahead with it. They don't consider any of the consultation, they just do it so they can say they have done it and tick a box. They are absolute crooks.

User312312 · 13/11/2025 16:49

i wonder what difference it’ll make too, consultations aren’t binding even if response very negative.

Green space is what makes Edinburgh special - cutting up Roseburn or Dean is madness. I like trams but this one wouldn’t benefit us at all we’d never use it, but we’d be affected by the disruption.

Good luck OP. I don't live in Scotland but "consultations" here in Wales usually means they've made their minds up and are just going through the motions.

FoxIn25 · 13/11/2025 16:59

It's so crap that we can have no faith in our elected councillors to listen to us. That said, hopefully people fill in the consultation rather than assuming there's no point to it - they have to publish the results, so will have to say how many objections they get. Harder for any of them to justify getting re-elected if they have clearly ignored residents wishes!

I agree with the consensus here, but I was recently on Reddit Edinburgh for some reason and saw a side conversation between two other posters about how anyone who doesn’t want the tram to replace Roseburn Path is a clueless NIMBY, probably rich, with no insight into what it could potentially do for Granton.

That gave me pause, but on reflection — no. I don’t think it’s that. (We are definitely not rich btw, and only semi local)

I would actually love to see Granton/Pilton improved, but this still feels like a case of misplaced priorities and lack of care for the environment. There is just so much else needing attention.

Just went to look again. There’s a big thread (or two) about it now. No time to read everything, but I think the person whose posts I saw yesterday is getting some pushback after all.

This person is a numpty. It doesn't take long to get to Granton on the city centre. What Granton really needs is for the council to pour money into the community, not a tram stop! There's a reason why there are soltires lining lower Granton road (how embarrassing btw). Edinburgh Council has neglected the area for decades and now somehow some boujee tramlines will help? Edinburgh Council is a joke.

FoxIn25 · 13/11/2025 18:22

I find the NIMBY argument a bit odd - the Roseburn path has what, 30 properties max along it, so not many backyards at all. It's so dismissive to say people only care about nature when it's in their back garden, green space benefits the whole city, plus climate change mitigation, it's not just for the people who live next to it
