Advice needed about Edinburgh trams and ingleston Park and ride

Planning on going to Edinburgh very soon from Glasgow, trains are expensive because our passes have run out so paying for 2 returns, we thought driving to ingleston and getting the tram into city centre might be cheaper...does anyone know rhe cost of park and ride on tram to city centre?
Thanks

Also, has anyone done this journey recently? We tried it a couple of months ago and the traffic was awful, really big tail backs going into the airport and the park and ride. I'm not sure if it was roadworks and if its still as bad.

The park and ride is free. The tail backs a few weeks ago could have been the royal highland show.

Yes it could have been that right enough. Do you know if there's anything on at ingleston the now?

Just seen there's a motoring festival held today, it finished at 5pm, am wondering if it clears of cars tomorrow or tonight?

It should all be gone by tonight.
Parking at the P&R is free, but you will have to pay for the tram. Can't remember the prices currently, but they are on the website.

If you worry about the traffic being bad you could always use the P&R at Ferrytoll. The traffic is bad for cars going into Edinburgh in the morning and out of Edinburgh in the evening, so you should be fine if going for a day trip as you'll be going the wrong direction to the rush hour traffic. You can get frequent buses from Ferrytoll into Edinburgh for £7 return.

Parking at the park and ride is free.

Return on the tram is £4.20

its a pleasant way to travel and it’s how I go in and out of Edinburgh from Fife.

Or you could get the bus from Buchanan Street to town centre. Especially if you have free travel 😃

MarxistMags · 20/07/2025 22:08

Could you park there to let someone off for airport?
Or it too far when you have cases?

Purpleisnotmycolour · 21/07/2025 10:42

It's a long ish walk from the park and ride to airport. You can get the tram but it's a ridiculous price for that section. Precisely to discourage this! You can drive a bit closer, turn left, just before last roundabout and fling them out on yellow lines? This is the road towards show ground. Or pay for parking. Annoying as it is.

BashfulClam · 21/07/2025 10:48

It’s cheaper than than train. We do it regularly. It’s under a fiver for the tram whereas the train return is £20ish each…ha ha no! We’ll go to Ingliston for the tram, even the petrol cost isn’t as much ac the train. If the SNP and the Greens want us to stop using our cars as much they might want to reduce train fares even more than just off peak.

If price a factor the slow train from Central is cheaper. Or get the bus- i think there are a couple of new operators.

Google maps will give you live drive times if you want to drive and get tram.

Either way it's a pretty straightforward normal journey.

Waze is better than Google maps.

you can but technically the signs say "no pedestrian access" from the most direct exit towards the airport although if there's no bus coming i've never had an issue walking down the road
It's at least half a mile to walk to the terminal building though, if you want to do free drop-off then you get 30min free parking in the long stay car park and from there it's a shorter walk to the terminal. There's designated bays for drop off /pick up along the back wall of the car park, as close as you can get from there to the terminal. It's based on number plate recognition so providing you're less than 30min the barrier just opens to let you out.
