Nairn area

If possible, I am looking for opinions and experiences of living in or near Nairn ( schools or kids not an issue). In particular are there any parts that are better than others? What’s good and not so good about it?

Hi 👋
we are looking at the same. Currently live in Lincolnshire and looking to move between Nairn and Inverness. I have only been to Nairn once to the beach is there anything in particular that draws you to the area?

SwallowsRising · 11/07/2025 22:41

Hi @WorthyReader I’ve been through Nairn on way to the north west highlands and to the beach and liked it, I’d like to live close to Inverness and on a train route. The climate in that area appeals too! How about you?

My dad lived there for many years and then moved to Forres.

They really liked Nairn - his wife was born and bred in Nairn and raised a family there.

They wanted a bungalow and Nairn prices were pretty high hence they went a bit further east.

Have you looked at Tornagrain? It's a new town built beteeen Inverness and Nairn - not much there but it's a good halfway point and very pretty.

Nairn is nice for the beaches and the links, has a pool, community stuff going on, golf etc.
Because it's on the main road to Aberdeen the traffic can be really bad - but I think that's rush hour more than all day.
I don't know what the doctors is like - in Forres it's terrible with people waiting weeks to get an appt.
If you had any specific questions PM me and I'll ask my parents.

@Loafbeginsat60 thank you that’s all really useful and positive! I will look at Tornagrain. I currently live further south in Scotland and need a car to get to shops etc so future proofing what’s likely to be final move with public transport, shops, beach on doorstep, airport not far, etc. Like your parents a bungalow is the hope.

Thank you again!

Ah ok. Beach is quite a drive from Tornagrain so better with Nairn really if you don't want to rely on the car.

There's a Sainsbury's and coop in Nairn and quite a few things on the high street.

Inverness would be clothes shops etc and you could get Tesco delivered from Forres.

Thanks again @Loafbeginsat60. Need to take a proper trip and spend a few days properly looking around.

Yeah the area is beautiful and we feel we will have a better work life balance. We have looked at Tornagrain and it looks like a lovely estate. They are building or have not sure a train station by the airport which will have good links to Aberdeen apparently. I much prefer the weather up there to the heat wave we are having down here as well

Loafbeginsat60 · 12/07/2025 22:22

Train station is built yes. Really handy to have!

It was 28 degrees here today - finally we have a summer! 🥳

My DC and partner are registered with a Forres GP they’ve never waited weeks for an appointment max 72 hours.
It weird local people say the same thing about my GP (south west coast) but every time I’ve asked for an appointment I’m always seen within 24 hours.
Traffic in Nairn can be bad morning and evening but my DC who regularly drive through it say it’s ok the rest of the time if you coming from the Forres side going to Inverness you can take the scenic route and miss the busier periods.
