Q for Scottish teachers re hours

Does anyone know the actual answer to this as I’ve looked on snct website and can’t see anything definitive.
Full time post has become available in my department…I already work 3 days but want to go to full time. Should the extra hours be offered to the dept first? Now it’s been advertised and presumably someone will be appointed and I won’t get to up my days? Bit frustrating isn’t it!?

What council? In Edinburgh, I’ve known teachers and support staff needing to apply for more hours unless they had reduced them for a period of time.

TartanMammy · 27/06/2025 23:22

No they don't need to offer you first. Often then will but there's no legal requirement for them to do so. This would leave them your 3days to backfill anyway.

In my LA this would need to be advertised. Why don’t you apply?

NewDogOwner · 28/06/2025 18:44

My friend had to apply and go through the full competitive interview process including interview and teaching a lesson.

If you want a full time role, you apply for the full time role that's being advertised, surely?

stonkytonk11 · 28/06/2025 20:28

I wouldn’t apply as have already been appointed to that role in that school, it’s just to add on 2 more days.

Think it’s just a new thing as my colleague a couple of years ago went from 3 to 4 days without any of the recruitment process at all

Yes, but you were appointed to a part time role. If you want a full time job you are going to have to apply. It’s literally the only way you’ll make your hours up to full time.

We never had to - were always asked to go full time in GCC as had too many part time teachers.

stonkytonk11 · 28/06/2025 21:38

@KingofMaythat’s irrelevant, job spec is the same whether part time or full time hours. I was appointed on that basis. Like I say, a couple of years ago it was a case of who wants more hours. Just a bit strange. I’m not going to be doing it anyway but just wanted to hear if others had similar experiences
