Is Bishopbrigg a good area to live for a young family?

Hi,
My family (Husband, wife, 12yo boy, 3 yo girl) renting in partick even since we moved to Glasgow.
We are looking for a property purchase and deciding on areas. Our biggest factor in choosing property is good schools. My son currently in S2 at Hyndland secondary which is a good school, so we want to move into areas where we get similar school and now we'll be looking for good nurseries/ primary as well for our 3yo.
We thought about Newton Mearns but it's too costly and heard people's are snobby.
I think bishopbrigg is good option given school and connectivity to Glasgow/Edinburgh. I go to office 2 days a week (in Edinburgh) rest of the days I work from home, so travelling will be easier for me as well.

But I am getting mixed reviews over internet regarding bishopbrigg so having a second thought. I view a property in Woodhill road, bishopbrigg is it a good area?
What other options we have in terms of areas/schools?
Our budget is around £300k, looking for minimum 3bedroom with parking (at least driveway) because currently I park at street which is very difficult.

Yes Bishopbriggs is fine.

Most of East Dunbartonshire is fine. Bearsden / Milngavie would be good but your budget may not stretch to that. And it’s been a few years since I’ve been there (used to have family in the area) so not that familiar with it these days.

Torrance, Milton of Campsie and Lennoxtown are also fine (all East Dunbartonshire) but public transport links aren’t as good.

I used to live in East Ren. It can be snobby and your budget may not stretch to that.

How about Kelvindale?

JWeegie · 27/06/2025 15:33

Thanks @justtootiredtodayfor your reply.
Bearsden seems to a good area for family but as you said budget is a problem.
I'll try Kelvindale if anything there with my budget.

Kelvindale would be a good option. Very close to the west end, nice houses.

Scotstoun would be good as well, but a lot of the houses are quite big, so not cheap.

Bishopbriggs itself is fine but wood hill road in my opinion is at the lower end of quality but with a £300k budget you might struggle for somewhere like Meadowburn or Park

JWeegie · 29/06/2025 21:19

Thanks @JackJarvisEsq
Yesterday I went to view a property at Woodhill road, market price was £220k so I didn't had much expectations from the property. Not only it's too old but small from what my requirement is. And no scope to build additional toilet (it has only 1). So a disappointment. I'll continue my search, hopefully something will come up soon.

best of luck on your search, house buying can be such a pain

Hi OP just jumping on this as we are considering moving to Bishopbriggs. Congratulations on the new house. Are you happy with the area?

Thanks!! 😊
Yes, though we are still settling in, we are extremely happy with the area. For schools both Bishopbriggs Academy and Turnbull High (RC) are 15-20 min walk, couple of primary schools are just 5 min walk, all other amenities are 10-15 min walk.
Most important - overall Bishopbriggs feels like cool calm area with some nice peoples (till now I met few of our neighbours and random people at Morrisons/railway station).
Edinburgh is just 40 min by train (express train every 30 min), Glasgow Queen Street is 5-7 min by train.

That's great to hear! We're trying to decide whether to offer on a house in the area, but it feels strange when we don't know the area at all or have family nearby, but from visiting and walking around it seems ideal.

Thank you! We aren't too far away at the moment so might see if we can make it.

I hope that you’re still enjoying Bishopbriggs, OP.

What did you decide, HettyMeg?

I’m moving to Bishopbriggs next week. It’s being invaded by Mumsnetters!

Yes, it always feels good to call 'our home' 😊
Only thing we are waiting for - our son's admission in Bishopbriggs Academy, they put him on redirect waiting list and offered place in Turnbull High school until a place becomes available in Bishopbriggs Academy, we decided to continue with his current school Hyndland, until he gets place here.

I’m glad to hear that you’re still enjoying life in BB. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you don’t have to wait too long for your son’s school placement .

hi, hope it's not to late to follow up your post! we are moving to the area soon. similar to your case that we dont know anyone there😂. did your son get in the academy yet? how do you find the school? any ideas about the wester claddens primary? thank you!

StrictlyCoffee · 09/05/2026 13:14

With your budget you probably don’t have the option of the so called “best” schools. If you have to go to Edinburgh regularly Bishopbriggs sounds fine. It’s a decent area.

Hi, welcome to Bishopbriggs!! 😊 Unfortunately our son is still in the waiting list of Bishopbriggs academy, I followed up 3 times since November but there is no movement in the waiting list and academy at capacity, so our son still going to Hyndland by train.

Almost all the secondary schools in East Dunbartonshire are very good, I don't have any idea about primary, but I assume they are good too.
Wester Cleddens Primary is literally 3-5 min walk from my home, our neighbours kids go to that primary.
