We may be staying in Carlisle for one night this weekend. Know nothing about Carlisle. Looking at the Halston Hotel on Warwick Road. Would appreciate some insight as to the local area. Shops, restaurants, is this an ok area etc. 2 adults and 2 older kids. Thanks so much.

The Tullie House Art gallery is great, and the tours of Carlisle Castle are really fun, as well as highly informative about Carlisle as a border town. There's a lot of history in Carlisle as a defence town at the northern edge of England. It's a lovely town (although they aren't keen on border reivers, so don't declare too much Scots nationalism! Grin ) Joke btw, although Carlisle is far more English than its eastern twin, Berwick, which has swapped nationalities several times. Carlisle has always been English. Not too far from Hadrian's Wall and the northern part of the Lake District.

Can't recommend local restaurants, but there is a the usual range of decent high street chains. It's a safe friendly town with its distinctive red sandstone.

Thank you so much for this!

I really like Carlisle, there is a nice park by the castle wall and the town centre is small but easy to explore.
We had a great pub lunch in The Last Zebra last time we were in town.

Cocktails and interesting food at the Last Zebra would make for a very good night out...

It is quite a small town, and like so many places these days there is rather a sense of tiredness in the centre. BUT the castle is really interesting, and 'exciting' in that there is enough of it left to get a true sense of how it was at various points in history as a living set of buildings. The cathedral is also worth a visit.

Although Carlisle is technically a city it's a fairly small town really so don't expect a busy cosmopolitan city centre! That said, there are worse places to spend a day.the castle is very interesting and the Tuille House museum isn't bad. The cathedral is worth a quick visit too. But that's all the places of interest in the city centre really. If you want to travel a bit further, you're not far from Hadrian's wall or the Solway Coast.
Your hotel is right in the city centre really and there's plenty of potential places to eat. I'd personally avoid Botchergate on a weekend evening- lots of bars down there and it can get pretty rowdy sometimes.
One thing to be aware of is that there are massive roadworks to the south of Carlisle at the moment due to the construction of the Carlisle Southern Relief Road and the northbound slip road at J42 on the M6 is closed, so if you're coming that way you might need to leave extra time for your journey. It normally takes me about 45 mins to get to Carlisle but I'm leaving over an hour at the moment as more or less every road I could used is affected!

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all your responses.

You're right in the centre there, I think it's a lovely city, lots to do. Lots of small shops around, giannis is an Italian restaurant right behind you and is the best one! Road works are a bit of a nightmare at the moment, but everything you need is pretty much near you. The castle and cathedral are worth a visit and are in walking distance. There's no supermarkets in walking distance, closest will probably be Tesco if you're bringing a car

Just to highlight Carlisle is in England.

I live in Carlisle. The city centre is a bit of a mess at a moment as they are doing a lot of building work to it, but the cathedral and tullie house are worth a visit. The halston is a lovely hotel and their afternoon tea is great. What sort of food to do like? Happy to make recommendations. There is a cool place quite near your hotel called game on which has bowling/pool/mini golf etc which is quite fun for kids/teens. There’s also a vue cinema nearby. Bitts Park is pretty to have a wander around. If you have a car, it’s also a great base to visit surrounding places.

YY to the Halston afternoon tea! (And the bones of my brutish ancestors compel me to state that half the Border Reivers were Cumbrians so can’t shunt all the blame/glory onto the Scots…)

Indeed! A guide showing me around an historic house in the US once, gestured to pictures on the wall of the house's builder, saying these were pictures of his ancestral home in Carlisle, Scotland. As a proud Lancastrian & northerner, I had to correct her - Carlisle was Scottish once about 1000 years ago, and not for very long.

The whole point of Carlisle Castle was to keep the Scots out. Grin
