DS has just turned 17 and started S6. He is currently planning fundraising for a gap year through project trust and is thinking of running a pub quiz style event.

I know from past experience as a PTA chair that the local council are very funny about any alcohol at events in schools and have a ban on alcohol on events in schools where there are under 18s present. If we were to take a room in a pub/hotel or similar, then they get the revenue on the drink.

Our ideal scenario is renting a church hall or similar and running an event on a BYOB basis. I am assuming I would still need to apply for a licence from the Council for this sort of event? It would have to be me or husband as DS is too young. Are you allowed to run this sort of BYOB event when there are under 18s present? DS wants his friends to be there and they want to support him. I'm not anticipating anyone wanting to get smashed, just have a couple of beers or some wine while arguing over trivia answers.

I can't help you with licencing question but I do know that many churches don't allow alcohol on the premises (the Church of Scotland has a national ban across all its churches).

Your local council website will tell you if you need a licence and if so how to apply and how much it costs.

If it's BYOB in a community hall then you don't need a licence. But you cannot under any circumstances make any money from alcohol, you also can't provide alcohol for free.

He may need a public entertainment licence for the quiz, but under 18s can't hold a licence.

If you call your council licensing team they'll advise you.

This isn’t true. I am a member of the COS and we have events relatively regularly where alcohol is served. It says on COS website it is a matter for the Kirk session so it’s up to each individual church - www.churchofscotland.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/2836/law_alcohol.pdf

Thank you all, will investigate. I know there is a local Baptist church with a hall but they are very anti-alcohol, and I won't even ask the Wee Frees!!
