Does anyone have experience of rehoming a dog from Drugs Trust specifically West Calder ?

I live nearby in Livingston. I think all the dog homes are much of a muchness in regard to adopting. What do you want to know?

We adopted our first dog from them and found them great.

@Cheffymcchef

We have identified a dog that we thinks sounds right for us, going by their online blog, and applied to adopt.

I hoped to hear from someone who had firsthand knowledge of this particular rescue and who had gone through their rehoming process.

It’s 16 years since we last got a dog, he died last July.
Rescues have changed how they do things in that time and I’m wondering how well they are able to match dog to people.

We took a long time to decide to get another dog and now that we have we realise how much we really do want another dog so maybe a tad over thinking it.

@Tiree1965 Good to hear that it worked well for you and your pup. Did it take long for them to match you ? Were they knowledgeable about your pups character and needs ?

thank you both for taking the time to respond.

@MinkaLeDinka We did wait as while as I'm allergic to some dogs. The first match we rubbed down with a towel, at their suggestion, and I lived with the towel beside me for 24 hours. When I reacted sadly we had to pass but they were keen that we didn't take a dog only to have to return it as I couldn't live with it at home.

It was then a good few months before we heard from them again but things then went very quickly with only a week between first meeting Jet and her coming home with us.

I hope it all works out for you.

Happy to hear that it worked well for you all.

Patience is the key then but I am really keen to share the summer with a doggy companion 😊

I see. I applied to adopt a dog from there, unfortunately it had so many applicants I wasn’t chosen! Definitely bear that in mind especially if it’s a younger dog or a purebred. They are always really popular.

if you ring them and ask they should let you come and meet the dog however it may be ‘reserved’ if someone else has taken a shine to it. If you get on with the dog they give you a trial period with it to ensure it’s suitable for you. They normally come and check out your home too. If the trial period is successful the dog will be yours.

Sorry to hear about your dog that passed to the rainbow bridge.

Thank you @Cheffymcchef Thank you your post was helpful.

They emphasise in the adoption paperwork that you are not applying for a particular dog, but you can show interest in a particular dog.

The dog that caught our interest is an older boy with an ongoing mild health condition, we can cope with this no problem. He just seems perfect for our live style - both retired, still active, but not climbing Munroes anymore 😂 calm household, youngest grandchild is 20. We have been looking online at various Centres and he stands out for us so fingers crossed.

We stay a fair bit North of the Centre and there are no Dogs Trust Centres near us, we are driving down tomorrow so will know more then.

We have to trust the process, but nothing wrong with nudging things along a bit.
