With SQA exams starting tomorrow, is it time for a general exam thread?

It's just DD for me, doing Nat 5s. My first 'anxious parent for formal exams' experience. Starts with Music on Monday and ends with Art & Design on 26th, so we've exams throughout. Study leave not started here so first exam is on first day of study leave. She's over revision already so going to be a long 5 weeks.

I’m a bit perplexed why RMPS seems to be such a big subject. It’s not as if we have lots of people off to study Divinity at uni and yet there were far more people sitting RMPS last year than computer science or Spanish. What’s the appeal?

Someone told me this is a good subject to do if you want to do law. So possibly this is reason?

Chesticles · 28/05/2025 15:36

I think the focus of the course has shifted from religious education (RE as we knew it) and incorporates much more of the moral and philosophical aspects, which possibly appeals to a wider audience. I know at my kids school there were 2 RMPS nat 5 classes and only 1 geography which really surprised me.

allaboutthatsass · 28/05/2025 15:40

DD did RMPS last year and loved it. Its not just about religion, it also covers ethics, philosophy and morality - that sort of stuff. From memory, DD learned about the different views on the big bang theory, issues such as abortion and IVF, and studied a particular religon (for DDs year it was hinduism I think).

Its good for a range of careers - medicine, law, divinity, teaching. DD found it really interesting and quite easy, but I know others find it has a lot of writing.

DS is doing RMPS because he likes a good argument.

Issy422 · 29/05/2025 21:39

Good luck to those doing RMPS tomorrow 🍀🤞

And for those finding out their new timetables tomorrow, I hope they get all the subjects they wanted with all the best teachers.

Good luck to any RMPS students tomorrow and happy last day to all of you!

thanks for this thread, it’s really has been a great support for me as a first time exam mum.

DD is getting new timetable at registration on Monday, then an extended assembly before set time slots to discuss any issues with the new timetable. I’m trying to encourage her to build any arguments etc but she’s not taking me on.

Issy422 · 30/05/2025 12:46

Just realised that I missed an exam, so good luck 🍀 🤞🏻 to anyone doing Care this afternoon.

Hope RMPS went well this morning.

And we are done....RMPS went well despite DD mini breakdown last night - this has been the longest month!

HGC2 · 30/05/2025 13:44

August seems like ages away now!

Issy422 · 30/05/2025 14:25

It's a great feeling to be at the end of it all.

I'm glad RMPS went well for some and look forward to hearing from any other RMPS or Care DPs later today.

Thank you to everyone for joining the thread. I hope you'll come back on results day (5 August) and let us know how your DC got on. Good luck to all your DC for great results. 🤞🍀

This has been a great thread, I agree. Glad everyone is done now.

imfae · 30/05/2025 16:54

That’s great everyone is finished now . Hope those DC who had an exam today at least get to relax a bit over the weekend .
Does anyone know if you have to register with SQA each year to get your results emailed / texted through . I assume you would get a new registration no each year , so would need to do so . Thanks .

Locallassie · 30/05/2025 19:47

It’s been lovely to see everyone’s posts. I hope that Monday brings the start of a good year for those staying on. Here’s to a good Summer and we can assemble like the Avengers here when August rolls round.

YouBelongWithMe · 30/05/2025 20:50

DD did N5 RMPS and DS Higher RMPS today. Both papers seemed to be really good, and they were both really happy with them.

Incidentally my son picked RMPS so he could argue AGAINST religious arguments with science 🤣

Chesticles · 30/05/2025 22:42

🎶And it looks like we might have made it, looks like we made it to the end 🎶 # Blur

only another 3 years of SQA exams n our house. 🙄

Koalafan · 31/05/2025 08:07

I've been more of a lurker than posting here, but enjoyed hearing how it all went. Hope everyone enjoys the summer without worrying too much about results, and that folk are happy with their choices going forward - be they staying on for S5, S6, or leaving for pastures new! We've come to the end of our school journey (just finished S6), and I'm really quite glad tbh.....onwards and forwards!

Onto S5 on Monday. I still think I prefer the English system of GCSE Exams slightly later then straight into the summer holidays and starting your next level after the summer when you know your results.

I could be wrong but I have a vague memory of 'not starting the next year until after the summer' at some point point pre 1990s. I vaguely remember the early start being something to do with getting a feel for the subject, with the option to change if it didn't work out well results wise or enjoyment wise. In reality most schools do a fair bit of work in those 3 to 4 weeks though.

SnaccidentsHappen · 31/05/2025 09:05

Has any one’s child picked a vocational course as part of s5? Have they heard anything about it, like if they got in or not as there are limited spaces.

my DS has been added to a teams chat for it but on his new timetable it shows geography which he was only going to take if he didn’t get into the vocational course so we don’t really know what’s happening.

They definitely do in the move from S4 to S5 as the gear shift is quite hard. I know the school my kids are at they started hard in June with the aim of finishing up teaching the course by the start of March when the assessment elements are due and to leave time for revision.

I think it's always been like that, I definitely started S5 classes in the June after I did O Grades as the last group to take those exams, although I don't think I was officially called S5 until after summer.

Yes, they definitely do work in that time.
I just have a vague memory of it being a new thing at our school to start the next year's classes in June. I'm from the mix of standard and ordinary grades vintage. 😬

Is the vocational course in school? Our local college often doesn’t run courses unless they are full which means people find out very late that it isn’t running. Alternatively if it is out of school it could be there will be a separate communication route for that or it may not start until after the summer?

SnaccidentsHappen · 31/05/2025 10:53

@CleaningSilverCandlesticksits organised by the school/council but is at a college. Ye maybe your right and it will start after summer -I would just have expected them to put out some sort of correspondence regarding it and not have another subject in his new timetable and also add him to a group for the course. I suppose he will just need to ask at school when he goes back on Monday.
