Trying to figure out why so few past papers are available.

i found an old thread on here with people discussing them taking higher economics back in eg 1989 so I am confused.

Maybe they changed the syllabus so old ones not longer relevant. Not offered in any of the schools in our area. Probably most with enough economics in their degrees to teach have gone to higher paying jobs.

I did higher economics in 2010 so it’s not new but I don’t think it’s regularly offered by schools. That was the first year my school offered it and it was only open to Sixth years. Sorry that doesn’t help explain why there’s so few past papers though 😅

I did it in 2005 as a 5th year. It wasn’t very popular at my school but glad to hear it’s still offered as I loved it and it will serve anyone well. Iv no idea re the past papers either. I don’t understand why it’s not more widely offered, I take @PearlStork point but surely most business teachers could do it? Hope you find some papers anyway! Good luck

@Stanley44132 You are right. I was thinking there would be a subject requirement of at least 80 units at level 8 or above in econ and similar in maths/stats but nothing noted so presume most business teachers would be allowed to teach.

Meant to add that one of mine did OU YASS Economics in 6th year. Loved it. Was same level as AH but didn't require any previous econ. Her OU tutors were great.

I did mine in 1994 and I don’t believe it was new in our (very regular state) school that year.

In Amazon there are virtually no study books or past papers for nat5. And in the sqa website it only goes back to 2019

I sat Higher Economics in 1988. I would guess that the lack of past papers must be because of a change in the curriculum.

Stanley44132 · 18/04/2025 14:45

It still seems odd. I had a look on eBay and people are selling old books of business management papers from years ago, why none for economics?

Considering the importance of the subject in all aspects of life and the doors it can open in careers to understand logically the basic principles, it’s a pity to hear that resources are not easy to come by to support students.

PearlStork · 18/04/2025 14:58

I'd guess commercial reasons. One of mine did RMPS and at the time there was no past papers published. School were good though as they provided old prelims (theirs and cluster schools)

Maybe it is because the content changes so often with the world changing? But there seems to be more available for gcse and a level

There was substantial reform of qualifications in 2015 so there will not be many years of past papers available. Also no exams in 2020 so no past papers for that year.

SQA only put the most recent papers on the website but I think you can get previous ones by changing the year in the url. Ask the school for practice papers too.

MistressIggi · 20/04/2025 08:47

Please don't look for further-back papers, there will have been changes made (around 2019 for some subjects) and there were also Covid mitigations for several years that affected the papers - the teacher will know what structure the current exam will take. By all means ask the school about accessing past papers but ones you find yourself (other than the ones currently on the SQA site) will not be helpful.
