Is Dumfries worth visiting for a few days?

Looking for a part of Scotland to visit for a few days and considering Dumfries. Adults only so no kids to consider. Is it feasible to get around via public transport and are there any other towns/villages in the area that you’d recommend?

TIA

Not sure about public transport but that area is absolutely beautiful.

Highlights for me are the porridge museum (not about oats!) , the whole solway firth area is stunning

Dumfries and Galloway is lovely but the wee places are better than Dumfries. Try Kipford/Rockcliffe/Sandyhills.

It's a beautiful part of the country, if you like walking and nature then you'll probably enjoy it. But there's not a lot going on.

It is not well served by public transport and you'd find it difficult to get around without a car.

Very poor for public transport as others have said. But it is beautiful! Borders is a better alternative if you don’t have a car.

Public transport is a shambles - you cannot really get around without a car/taxi I'm afraid, as others have said.

Avoid Dumfries, but the surrounding areas are beautiful - I grew up there. Head down to Kirkcudbright/Castle Douglas for a proper market town feel, and decent places to eat, and you can do the coastal walk from Rockcliffe to Kippford (and back). Alternatively, Thornhill (which has Drumlanrig nearby and plenty of walks down by the River Nith and up through the hills) has nice shops and a decent pub.

The actual town Dumfries is not worth it, we are down regularly at the ice rink and there is bugger all to do.

Dumfries is definitely worth visiting for a few days, especially for adults looking to explore a charming part of Scotland. If you're looking to explore other towns and villages in the area, I would recommend checking out nearby places like Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, and Moffat for their picturesque landscapes and rich history. Overall, Dumfries and its surrounding areas offer a delightful mix of culture, nature, and history for a memorable visit.

Had a lovely stay in Dumfries about three years ago, with adult friend. Got there by bus from Stranraer. Visited Caerlaverock bird reserve to see barnacle geese (it was early October), also Kirkcudbright, all on bus. Castle Douglas looked worth a look, also Moffat, but we didn't have time. Loved passing to and from along the river in Dumfries, herons on the weir and goosanders on the water. Left by train. I know nothing about nightlife or entertaining kids though.
