Removing irn bru stain from carpet

deuxgarcons · 26/02/2025 07:52

I have an irn bru stain in a light carpet. Whilst we got as much off as possible when it happened a stain lingers and has dried. Any wise recommendations for trying to get out. I have tried white vinegar and dish soap but that hasn't worked. 😭

I don't know but I love this is in Scotsnet and not Housekeeping.

Signed - an English person with no Irnbru knowledge 😁

I went to uni with a student whose part time job was a carpet cleaner and he said the one thing they couldn’t get out of the carpet it was irn bru. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Ditto.

Dr Beckman is my go to for anything carpet.

I had this recently, I used Vanish stain remover in powder form (well Ocado’s own brand version). Sprinkled it on the stain in a thick layer, sprayed with water and left overnight. Then cleaned off in the morning with my carpet spot cleaner. It worked, after trying various things that didn’t. My carpet is beige-ish rather than very light.

deuxgarcons · 26/02/2025 08:07

I'll get some carpet cleaner and try that and the Dr Beckman.
Yes I thought I'd better a better response in scotsnet 🤣. DH Scottish (he's the culprit) I'm English so no idea it stained so bad 🤣

Same issue here right now- have got the worst off with Dr Beckmann I had, but got 1001 (the yellow bottle) on shopping list as it's usually miraculous. Failing that well placed rug is only solution short of a new carpet!

I was just going to say similar. The local carpet cleaner here said he doesn't mind his teenagers having friends round for parties and the like but he will not let irn bru over the doorstep.

ETA: Good luck @deuxgarcons

Bicarbonate of soda onto the carpet, pour white vinegar directly onto it. Let it bubble up and settle then scrub with cloths. That lifts out coffee, Irn Bru and Coca Cola! you can give it a sponge over after that to remove the vinegar traces.

When we rented I only drank irn bru in the kitchen as all the other rooms had light carpet. Delighted that other posters have found a solution that works. As a side note, irn bru is not the same any longer

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/02/2025 08:48

My nephew spilled Irn Bru on our carpet. We had to make an insurance claim. They sent out a carpet cleaning contractor but even he couldn't clean it, so we had to get a new carpet.

deuxgarcons · 26/02/2025 18:54

@Blindsidedandconfused re it not being the same anymore, DH says it's only decent from a glass bottle not a plastic one!
Thanks everyone for your help

There's a hotel we visited for a wedding once , they had light coloured carpets , and part off their contract was no irn bru! This was pretty rare at a Scottish wedding.

snoopyfanaccountant · 02/03/2025 23:02

Dunns Limeade can also be added to the "stains and can't be removed" list. An ex (in my teens and he's still a good friend) had a summer job with Dunns as a student and he had to deal with a claim where limeade had been spilled on a carpet.

It's not so much the bottle it's the sweeteners that got added a few years ago due to the sugar tax. You can still get the original recipe 1901 stuff in tall cans or glass bottles though. I have got used to the new regular stuff, it's not quite the same but ok and recognisably still Irn Bru. But don't get me started on the travesty of what they did to original Lucozade as a result of same tax. The new version bears no resemblance to the original. I miss it so. Being sick isn't the same any more.

TRNSMTtaxi · 04/03/2025 10:46

Our local carpet cleaner got irn bru stains out of our playroom carpet with his magic chemicals and machines but I'm not sure over the counter products would work. I'd get someone in!

MooDengsFatRolls · 05/03/2025 14:24

The irony of suggesting an Ocado brand product when Ocado don't operate in Scotland Grin
