Flat for daughters Glasgow

Good evening - I am looking for advice on locations to rent or buy for my daughters ( age 20 and 23) who are moving to Glasgow in the summer. They live in Edinburgh at the moment but are not familiar with Glasgow . I am looking for central locations where they will feel safe and with easy transport links to Glasgow airport for one who will be cabin crew. I have lived in Inverness for years but originally an Edinburgh lass but I have no idea about districts in the Glasgow area. Their rental budget is about £1000-£1200 a month for a 2 bedroom flat ( might be able to stretch that budget a little ) in the future a flats purchase of between £150 - £180K .

Battlefield or Mount Florida. They are becoming popular with large 2 beds sometimes over 300k but it should still be possible to get something within budget. Safe, well connected areas with lots of younger professionals. Easy to get to the motorway/city centre.

Prices in Glasgow have shot up for rental and buying in recently years. I suppose its the same everywhere.

Personally I would look to rent in the city itself and avoid the west end as it has a lot of high cielings which can be a bugger to heat.

Merchant City is the posh part (albion Street, parsonage Square etc direction) and I never had any trouble renting there. Well besides awful upstairs neighbours but that can happen anywhere. Would recommend if it can be afforded.

Avoid Govanhill, its too rough to be worth cheap prices. Full of rats too. I'd also avoid Cambuslang too, purely because any time I got on a bus to or from that way, it was chalk full of roasters.

For transport to Glasgow airport there's a bus from Buchanan Street bus station in the city centre. If you went with the west end your daughter could get the subway to the city centre then the airport bus. Transport options from the southside would be a train to central (quicker and more pleasant than a bus!) then walk up to the bus station. Consider the transport links when choosing.

A quick look at rental options shows plenty for your budget.

I would stay in the merchant city. And catch the bus out to the airport. Something like this https://www.onthemarket.com/to-rent/flats-apartments/glasgow/?bounding-box=y_%7DsIxnzXh_%40fq%40&min-bedrooms=2&view=map-only

I’m totally biased because I live in the west end - it’s pricey but totally worth it!

South side prices are completely insane right now, it’s very popular with younger buyers so might appeal to your daughters.

I’ve never been a fan of the merchant city but DH lived there for years and seemed to like it.

West end, Southside ( Pollockshaws , Pollockshields) Laurieston, The Gorbals, Merchant City are probably all ok.
I would agree with avoiding Govanhill or some of the areas that are further out .

At that budget you should be able to get something City Centre but it's a long way to the Airport.

We don't have any direct rail links to the airport so you'd either get the train to Paisley and travel from there or be relying on buses. And it would be 30 or 40 mins minimum on a bus from City Centre.

If airport adjacent was ideal places like Renfrew, Paisley and Johnstone you would probably get a really nice house at that price as well but you'd be sacrificing the vibrancy of the City centre.

I lived in the West end as a student, there was an airport bus from Partick bus station, assume this is still running! I know things have become more expensive these days but back in 2010 there was an abundance of lovely, affordable flats in the WE, and there were slightly less nice streets that were cheaper than areas such as Hyndland etc. A quick look at rightmove suggests that an area like Partick would have 2 bed flats in your budget.

Thanks for everybody’s inputs it’s really helpful ! We shall keep looking and keeping an eye out - the good thing is we are not in a hurry and will take our time to get the right place for them renting at first to get a feel for what works for them .

Dennistoun is worth looking at.

TwentyKittens · 21/02/2025 14:45

I second both Mount Florida and Denistoun.

I also third avoiding Govanhill. I used to live there when it was a bit rough, and it's just gone downhill from there!

PersephonesPomegranate · 21/02/2025 14:52

If you want close links to Glasgow Airport also consider Paisley/Renfrew or Renfrewshire more generally. They are easily accessible to Glasgow city but also handy for the airport.

TriangleLight · 21/02/2025 14:55

City centre. Bus from Queen Street to airport. Southside is a bit of a fanny to get places and Dennistoun is getting expensive and you really need to be in the right bit or it’s still not great.

We bought in Partick for my daughter and she loves it
