Do kids normally do crash higher in 6th year? Or can it also be done 5th year?

Ds may think about doing crash higher history. His talents appear to be essay writing and not maths type subjects. He didn’t pick history for n5 though. So will he need to wait til 6th year if he wants to take it as a crash higher?

Depends where it would fit on a timetable and if the school agrees he can take it in S5. I'm sure my ds crashed higher chemistry in S5 and then took it at advanced higher in S6. He crashed higher computing in S6.

One of mine crashed H History.. Like your son, her essay subjects were good. School usually discouraged crashing but were fine if you were good.

Crash higher in S6 …. Unless for music/language spoken at home …. I think is the ‘norm’?

My DD crashed higher RMPS in S5 and higher geography in S6.

It will depend on timetabling and how he is doing otherwise. My eldest crashed Engineering Science higher in S6, he did it to the end of S3 but dropped it after that, school were happy to let him do it as he had a good pass in Higher Maths.

DD crashed Modern Studies Higher in S6, she hadn't done it since S2 but she had good Higher passes in both History and Geography in S5 so had proven that she could cope with social science subjects.

My third child has always gone his own way and despite getting a good pass in Mod Studies at Nat 5, didn't want to do it as a Higher in S5 so asked school if he could take Geography instead, after dropping it at the end of S2. He appears to be doing OK so far but still haven't had prelim results...

Crashing in S6 is normal as they are more mature and know is what is expected at Higher level, S5 less so. Will really be school and head of department dependent.

Ds had to write a letter to the department head with his reasons and to get permission for crashing in S6, never heard of anyone doing it in S5 in his school. Worth a try though.

DS crashed H Biology in S5. It depends on what the timetable is like, it can be done S5 or S6.

Vettrianofan · 21/01/2025 07:10

In DS's case, he didn't like the look of anything else on the timetable and had to pick a subject, so he decided to try H Biology. He had a good rapport with the teacher and she was very supportive knowing he was crashing the Higher. He went to all Supported Study sessions available to make sure he did well.

A long time ago now, but we def only crashed in S6, and only a limited number of subjects.

Bellebelleagain · 24/01/2025 15:57

My DD crashed Advanced Higher History as her modern studies, psychology and English highers were so good. It helped that her modern studies teacher also taught history so supported her doing it as knew she’d get on well and knew some of the topics already as there was some cross over with mods.

Ds3 crashed computer science in 5th year so that he could do the advanced higher in 6th year but he took it as an extra subject off timetable so possibly different.

DD is crashing Higher music in S4. A few of them are but it’s due to the weighting of the performance element. Her pal crashed H Chemistry last year in S5.

gracielooloo · 28/01/2025 19:42

DD is crashing Higher Philosophy this year (S5) and plans to do Higher History in S6 which she hasn’t done since S2 or 3.

It probably depends on the school.
I crashed Higher History years ago, while in S5 and along with 4 other Highers - based on my standard grade performances they were pretty sure I'd manage fine and I did. Different schools do different topics though - I enjoyed the topics we did but would have hated some of them!

Based on DD sitting history this year having achieved an A band 1 pass at Nat5, there is quite a jump between the two and she has been doing quite a lot of studying to maintain her grade. I'd crash in S6 rather than S5 as unis tend to be looking for a good level of grades in 1 sitting so crashing a Higher which seems quite tricky would feel like a risky approach.

Aurea · 11/02/2025 07:10

My son crashed higher mods in S5. He dropped a grade partly due to the fact that all his other subjects were not essay based so he was lacking in technique. Luckily the dropped grade didn't matter as he had five other good highers as he had taken higher music early in S4.

He wasn't put off and crashed advanced higher RMPS in S6 and got the highest mark in the class.

History is a subject where Nat5 performance doesn't really indicate Higher performance tbh.

Band 1 at Nat 5 often indicates good memory skills and little else.

My youngest crashed H History in S5. Has good writing skills (and was interested in the topics) so did well. Crashed a different SS at AH level in S6 but had less subjects so easier (and no pressure to pass).
