NHS back pay

I have just looked at my payslip - top of band 5 - full time - have been on mat leave this last year and back beginning September - £166 arrears?! Surely incorrect, should go on my basic hours salary surely? 🤔 will be going to payroll but anyone else in same situation?!

That doesn't seem right, dp is top of band 4, 30 hours, and his back pay was around £400 after tax.

the only thing I can think is they’ve worked it out on my monthly earnings when on maternity leave - April- September which doesn’t really make sense 😭 and feels unfair! I was expecting it to be about £600 after tax

I thought the nhs were getting it paid in instalments?

That's right, it'll be 5.5% of what you've earned since April, minus deductions so if you weren't earning very much your backpay won't be very much.

You needed to opt-in for instalments, otherwise it's a lump sum.

orangestarburst · 26/11/2024 22:05

If you are on universal credit etc we had the option to pick to have it spread over 3 monthly installments, instead of the lump sum - but there was a form if you wanted to do that with a cut off date etc. I’m not on UC and didn’t do that form 🤔 I really hope it’s a mistake and I’m due more than what’s on there just now 🙃

Hmmm I do get that, just seems unfair as I was on maternity leave 🥲 so anyone who’s done mega overtime will get a much bigger back pay?

Yes that's how it works I'm afraid. People on part time hours will also be pro-rata based on what they have worked.
You dont expect to get 5% of a full-time salary if you didn't work full time during that period.

Thanks it does make sense, I’m still gutted about it as had already spent it in my head after coming back off Mat leave and being poor already 😅

@orangestarburst
There was a post on our staff bank page from someone in payroll explaining the back pay. Apparently for Mat leave it is only calculated on the first 26 weeks of Mat leave (irrespective of whether you choose to equalise the payments). It's to do with the the occ/stat pay divide. Pretty rubbish. I'm sure payroll will be able to explain it better

Well yes, because it’s back pay for the pay rise. If the pay rise had taken place at the time it should have, in April, you’d be in the same position as you’d be on maternity pay, so it’s not unfair.
