Anyone installed double glazing in a listed building, especially Glasgow area?

If you have I'd love to know which firm you used, what type of glazing you installed, and if you were happy with the windows and the company you used.

Our flat is in a listed building in a conservation area, so I know the regulations about what we can do will be very strict. Definitely no PVC, and I think that the Council prefer you to refurbish original windows rather than replace.

None of the neighbours have had double glazing installed, so can't get any personal recommendations. All the websites I've been looking at seem very professional and have great marketing, but I'd put far more value on hearing from a happy client. Hoping that someone can offer some advice........

Just bookmarking! We have had a fairly interesting time, and a lot of money re windows. We didn’t want plastic and saved the old wood frames …but! Would love to have them sorted!

Contact the Window Advice Centre. We have used them twice. Their surveyor comes out and measures up and they then put the job out to tender. Once you agree to a contractor, you pay a deposit but you don't pay the balance until the surveyor has been back out and signed off the work.

Yea, I used Glasgow West End Windows
They were absolutely phenomenal and done everything for us. A little pricey, but worth it to have all the stress taken out of it!
They also custom made wooden shutters for us.

We used Alan of SWR Scotland (Sash Windows Replacement). He was brilliant and reasonably priced - but has awaiting list of about 6 months Shock

We're in a conservation area so the replacements had to be like-for-like: wooden sash windows.

The difference it has made in our lounge, which has a big bay window, is phenomenal. We can now sit in the bay in winter and not freeze Wink

Thank you so much for these replies!

I've contacted the Window Advice Centre, after seeing them recommended on an old thread here, and they are going to come round. They sound very knowledgeable and helpful, and everyone only seems to have good things to say about them.

From the information we've given them they seem to feel that secondary double glazing would be our best option, particularly from a noise reduction point of view. Also a lot cheaper! I'm not sure if I'd like the look of them though, and also if condensation, which is a big issue, would still be a problem.

I'll definitely have a look at SWR Scotland and Glasgow West End Windows too. Thanks again!

I would love to have wooden shutters too! Will have to see how much is left in the pot after the window replacement though🙂

My neighbour used Glasgow Traditional Windows for their stained glass refurb. Kept this original sash window feature in a double glazed window unit and they look great.
