also @TheWittyBird - what did Martin Lewis say ? Did you mean to include a link ?

He mentioned about the questions that needs filled in to get pension credit there is lots and it will stop people with learning difficulties and dementia applying for it , why don't the powers to be write to them?

Timetodownsize · 07/11/2024 10:10

Thanks @TheWittyBird - I also like Martin Lewis and yes did see that the form to apply for pension credit has over 200 questions. Cynical me thinks this is done on purpose to deter people from applying.

Who has had their heating on yet? I do understand the elderly cannot move around as much and generate heat but it has been very mild so far this season. I work outside and I’ve not had the need to wear a coat let alone a hat which is becoming the norm.

I think pensioners get a lot of benefits and concessions in Scotland and there is a lot of help for those genuinely in need.

Do you live in Scotland? We are scrapping ice off cars in the morning in parts off Scotland

I’m having a nightmare just now with the mother in law she’s trying to pay her house insurance and it’s all online and pay online ( she’s too old for this carry on) and trusts no one what chance does folks have with these questions

And this will be us all in the future!
Even people who are tech savvy find it difficult to know what to do when things aren't straightforward or go wrong when they're elderly and have so some cognitive problems.

So saying it's progress and it will be fine in the future as younger generations will all have been used to everything being online is wrong.
In the future with no human to help us at the bank, on phone lines for insurance, energy suppliers etc we will be so much more dependent on our family to manage our business for us.

Yes helpfulperson I do live in Scotland, rurally and north east of central belt.

It has been very warm in this part of Scotland and very dry, the reservoirs are very low.

What part of Scotland do you live in that has had such icy conditions?

EmmaMaria · 07/11/2024 16:46

Isn't it funny how many people are simultaneously in favour of means testing the winter fuel payment and against "means testing" child benefit? Perhaps in the pursuit of fairness, only pensioners with an income of £60,000+ should get their fuel allowance stopped?

Brananan · 07/11/2024 16:48

Good. Sounds fantastic.

We have ours on for an hour every morning. In Scotland.

TheWittyBird · 07/11/2024 18:47

I know it was last week but they were scraping the cars in Ayrshire

ThatAgileCoralBird · 07/11/2024 19:30

Gosh last week I was in my sleeveless top, it was so warm outside here!

Climate change is really mucking things up and such variation in microclimates. Surely this makes such a blanket policy within a set budget ineffective and costly.

So disappointing the SNP government has scrapped the green targets.

couple of weeks ago we were scraping cars south of Edinburgh.

South Yorkshire disabled pensioner - my feet are so cold that I can't feel them. What "you" feel - probably a younger and fully fit person - is not what other people feel. It isn't a competition about who is warmest. It's a pittance to help the poorest and most vulnerable survive the entire winter.

HermoinePotter · 07/11/2024 23:34

Swinney to subsidise the bloody winter heating payment for all pensioners

That’s not what the article said that was linked and I can find nothing that says this is actually happening. All I’ve found is “actively considering” it in the budget. OP you sound a really angry person from your posts.

I’m wondering this too, we’re rural Highlands and have had a very light frost one day so far. It’s been quite mild where we are.

Me , I’ve had my heating in for the last 3 weeks. I don’t consider 16.5 degrees in my house to be mild when wfh.
I actually cannot believe posters are complaining about reinstalling this benefit. As for 1 in 4 pensioners being millionaires they must have missed out living in my elderly mothers area.Does anyone know a millionaire pensioner?
How sad some of the comments are on here are.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 08/11/2024 11:40

There are quite a lot round me.

Quite openly stating they pay for their grandchildren’s private school fees and ponies, playing golf and curling (costly sports) or continually jetting off on holidays.

a lot of pensioners do not have millions in the bank but their property, cars etc add up.

A universal benefit to only the elderly excludes others who are in need and goes some way to creating division amongst different age groups.
