Potentially moving to Inverness for work, and wondering where to consider living. Dont want to live in the city, so slightly further out but commutable. Would up to say, 20-odd miles away be reasonable (roads-wise, weather in winter)? Cursory search is throwing up places like Contin and Alness - are these nice places? Where else might you recommend? Don’t need to worry about schools. Public transport would be useful, eg a train station. Any advice from those in the know would be much appreciated.

I was just thinking of coming back to retract my Milton of Leys bashing - sorry! You do get more house there and the gardens are such good sizes, plus handy for the shops and schools ☺️

Thanks I quite like the Milton of leys area though did live above the snow line at one point and wouldn't recommend it. Right at the bottom is fine as you get much less snow and can walk easily up shops etc. I think at least half the area hads dogs to.

i don’t agree that Alness is a dump. It has its moments like most places but compared to most cities bad areas it really isn’t. It has a thriving high street and fantastic community with lots of events. It has 2 supermarkets and easy to get to Inverness. Dump is pretty strong. Having said that, if I was moving that way I’d look at Ardross for buying a house. You have the best of all words. Country living 3 miles to Alness for the shops and still commutable easily to Inverness.
