Scottish UCAS applicants 2025 entry

i know there's a HE board but that's dominated by English parents/schools/unis.

I thought I'd start our own thread for Scottish parents of kids applying to UCAS this year. What are your kids applying for? Where are they applying?

I'll start!

DD is applying to primary teaching. Considering Glasgow, Strathclyde, and Stirling. We discussed UWS but its too far away to commute and as she'd be a young 17 (february born), I wouldn't feel comfortable with her so far away. She's academically capable, but in some ways still quite young.

She has BBBCC from S5 (bastard SQA and Higher HIstory). Doing 1 AH and 2 more HIghers this year. Qualifies for a contextual offer.

Personal statement draft all done. Teacher seems happy with it. She has work experience, did the Accerlerate Education challenge I think its called and is accepted onto Top Up. So her statement looks quite good.

What annoys me is that Strathclyde asked for something specific to be included in the personal statement but that's specific to Strathclyde and might not necessarily be accepted by other universities or what they want to see. Plus it doesn't seem to be mentioned on their entry requirements so other applicants may not know this for that particular course.

Also annoys me that they don't use UCAS Tariff points. That would make it so much easier as its not clear if DDs C grades are accepted or not.

DDs school will do the submissions in December. Then I'll probably post here like every day as an anxious mum or rather angry mum - why won't they give my DD a place? lol

congrats on the offers - what were they for?

DDs application is being sent on Thursday (primary education). I'm quite pleased that her teachers have given her higher predicted grades than expected and I hope that makes a difference. She seems to think she could get an offer straight away but from what I have seen, for this course they tend to wait until after the UCAS deadline.

We actually heard back from Glasgow today! A full offer, conditional on attending an online academic skills module from the summer school programme. Delighted!

That's brilliant news 👏 congratulations on these offers. Very exciting!

DS still working on his personal statement, it's to be in by the beginning of the Christmas holidays at his school so he better get a move on😬

cushionfiend · 29/11/2024 15:02

@Vettrianofan @motheronthedancefloor Thank you! It's definitely a relief. Although now hoping DC doesn't just lose all motivation to do well in S6 dissertations and exams. Although she said that she might actually do better in those now that the pressure is off. Sending luck, patience and strength to everyone on this thread and your DCs!

motheronthedancefloor · 29/11/2024 20:13

DD pissed off cause her application is in now and she's getting spammed by the universities but not one email is an offer lol

He's got a draft done - finally! Think mine must be the only one still not with a UCAS form completed 🙄

Talk about laid back 😂

Universities are required to treat all applications in before the end of January the same, apart from those requiring early entry like medicine and Oxbridge. (End of January being a specific date near the end so might not be 31st)

Thanks, you're making me feel a bit better. Everywhere I read kids have already got offers from x or y University and just wondered if he had missed the boat for 2025 entry😬

I suppose there's always clearing, but as you say if all applications have to be in before end of January that's reassuring.

MsTimTam · 29/11/2024 23:16

From what I can gather from my dd, quite a few people are still to submit applications from her school. She's did hers a bit earlier as she had to have surgery on her wrist a couple of weeks ago and wanted to get it done before that so it was one less thing to do while she was recovering.

We weren't expecting any response so quickly so the three offers were a lovely surprise while she was moaning about not being able to do anything!

Ginko · 30/11/2024 00:04

The UCAS equal consideration deadline for all other courses is 29 January 2025.

Vettrianofan · 03/12/2024 10:17

Do the school pupils these days pay £28.50 processing fee??

DS was about to send the form and I said I am not sure you do unless this is a new way of doing it since I did mine years ago??

I thought school pays the fee?

Vettrianofan · 03/12/2024 10:51

He's contacted school to find out.

We have paid the fee.

We have paid the fee.

Just got a response from him - he has to pay.

I wonder why this isn't talked about more, surrounding the process of applying. Also, does the teacher reference follow on after the pupil submits their application? Does anyone know?

motheronthedancefloor · 03/12/2024 16:23

heads up!

If any DCs are applying to Strathclyde for 2025 entry, the 'minimum' grades may change on Friday.

They are updating the widening access page, including the spreadsheet with widening access grade requirements (the current one there is for 2024 entry).

Just in case any DC are sitting additional exams in S6 and do not yet meet the entry requirements.

DS has just paid to submit UCAS form. I noticed on the screen it goes to his school first then to UCAS.

This has been a real learning curve doing all this with my eldest!

Honestly do not recall paying to submit a form to UCAS years ago, neither does DH. How times have changed.

Luckily found a thread about the UCAS fee and whether we need to pay for it from 2019 which made me feel a bit better - someone else clueless too😀

Singinginthespring · 18/10/2024 21:22

We have been told by school that unless you have any pointers towards a contextual offer, always always always have an English / Welsh option in there due to the capping situation.

Deleted as I realised the thread has moved on…

DD has an interview at Glasgow uni end of January! So much quicker than I expected!

@motheronthedancefloor Woohoo! Yours and mine might end up in the same place.

When did she send off her form? Good luck for your DD for the January interview!

DS just sent off his on Tuesday so not convinced he will hear back till after Christmas.

Wow that's fast @motheronthedancefloor 🫨

motheronthedancefloor · 05/12/2024 13:39

I reminded her its not an offer yet, its just an interview, and that the other universities might take a bit longer to come back, so I'm a total 'buzzkill' even though I did say all the 'well done, proud of you' before that...

OP posts:
Vettrianofan · 05/12/2024 15:13

That's not so bad. Good so many are getting acknowledged so quickly even if not a direct offer as yet.

Fingers crossed for everyone and their DC!!

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 05/12/2024 16:15

May I join in... am on another thread in HE but it is very English A Level centric....

DD has applied for English and French at St Andrews, Edinburgh, Stirling, Nottingham ( as she decided she liked the city during a summer visit to do a journalism course) and Queens, Belfast ( for reasons I am unclear on!)

We've done open days at the Scottish Unis and will attend offer holders days for the other two if appropriate...

She has AAAAB at higher ( bloody art and its subjective nature 😹) and is taking AH in English French and Modern Studies alongside a part higher in Philosophy "for fun".

She already has an unconditional offer from Stirling and a conditional from Nottingham ( they want at least AB for AH English and French, which should be doable).

Still waiting to receive anything other than spam from the other three...
