Where to stay Edinburgh festival?

Total newbie to the festival but some friends and I would like to check this off our bucket list. There are 6 of us and range in age from 40's to 60's - all female.
Any advice on where to stay? we will probably fly there so no car to get around.
Thank you

Look at any accommodation on the tram route. It runs late into the evening, and near to Edinburgh Park there are a few hotels given the business district.

You need to book early!

Bettyscakes · 06/10/2024 10:39

It depends completely on your budget!

You don’t need a car here - parking costs are crazy! There is great public transport.

LIZS · 06/10/2024 10:42

Most takes place around the Old Town/Castle although some venues in New Town. It is very-busy and noisy well into the night, so you might want to look further out. What is your budget as prices can be ridiculous.

We were thinking of 4 nights - does that sound about right? Not sure budget wise but we could spend £100-£150 per night per person. Again, is that an okayish budget?

Willing to share rooms or separately? We stayed here pre pandemic, central but quiet https://www.hotelsone.com/edinburgh-hotels-gb/parliament-house-hotel.html?as=g&aid=693747671948&dsti=9721422&dstt=8&nid=1&gadsource=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD4o1Pcxl5mD85D9A7WR0gwrqvA5S&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6oi4BhD1ARIsAL6pox0Yt7B4FvjNytgFpEg0OLbTm3EPMeFMptNOj3OqZzcW9VmvfV1gIIoaAspUEALww_wcB or if you want facilities try the Marriott Holyrood (a spa package may be cheaper than the nightly rate).

Another vote for booking early, as Edinburgh’s population doubles during that period. Theres not just the fringe festival, but other festivals as well.

I agree, parking costs are horrendous in the city centre but public transport is cheap and good.

My ds used to fly , but now trains it . Get a Two Together railcard to reduce costs

Holiday inn by the zoo or at Craigleith.
Both on main arteries into city centre and about 15 minutes on the bus.

Bettyscakes · 06/10/2024 15:54

This year in addition to the festival Oasis are playing week of the 8th August. I would avoid. Costs will be through the roof!

I would say the budget is too low for central Edinburgh, you will need to look at the outskirts and I’d book sooner rather than later.

HarrietBond · 06/10/2024 15:57

We’ve got a room at the Premier Inn Hub just off the Royal Mile for £200 a night at that time. We’ve been there before for the Festival and it’s a great location. But it’s a small double bed so not ideal for friends sharing unless you are quite relaxed about squishing up.

VoyagerOfTheTeenYears · 06/10/2024 16:07

Student accommodation. You could get a six en-suite bedroom flat with shared kitchen.

or further out along a train line or a hostel or pay a lot of money!

ArghhWhatNext · 06/10/2024 16:10

We used uni halls down towards leith. Easy walk but would also have been in tram route.
I think it worked out about £110 per head.

Edinbu · 07/10/2024 00:41

I’m actually thinking of suggesting our house!

PrueHal · 07/10/2024 01:30

I stayed in student accommodation for £230 over three nights this year.

Once you're there it's everyone from kid age to pension age staying there from all over the world. So I recommend it. Or choose somewhere you like nowish.

MiddleAgedDread · 07/10/2024 09:53

Edinburgh buses are brilliant but accommodation prices typically triple in August so it really comes down to where you can afford. You definitely don't want a car anywhere near the city centre anyway!! Even the central premier inns are going to stretch your budget but if you don't mind a bus ride into the city then the ones at Leith Waterfront (actually Newhaven harbour!) and Edinburgh Park are cheaper but there's not much nearby. If you find some options for your travel dates and budget we can advise which would be the best locations.

@Edinbu interesting

Edinburgh is quite small so don't make the mistake a lot of tourists do and assume you need to stay on Princes St for which you'll pay a fortune. Public transport is good - look to places on the tram or even on the train.
