Where to live south of the River Clyde?

We currently live on the other side of the river but my DH's commute (to Greenock/Gourock) is getting quite hard going and I think we need to seriously consider moving over the Erskine Bridge.

I do know all of those towns/villages vaguely. Bishopton would be ideal in lots of ways cause it's got good train links into Glasgow but I'd prefer to be closer to the water. Equally though, when I look at the nice parts of Greenock I'm not sure I want to be that far out in terms of train... I mainly work from home but that could change so need reasonable access to Glasgow and (occasionally) Edinburgh.

Any got any hints/tips/recommendations/things to look out for?

Langbank?

does Langbank actually feel like it's own place? does that make sense? i've only ever been to the restaurant - never been in the village properly...

@Sturmundcalm I stay in Houston. Only 20 mins from Greenock & definitely it's own place 😃

The High School is one of the top ranking in Scotland. Handy for the airport or Glasgow too. Either via the M8 or there are 2 stations 10 mins away. Its a nice place to live albeit not at the coast.

Don't know if I've ever been to Houston!

Not sure about it because it's further away from the water and I'm assuming the ten minutes to the train station is by car when I'd prefer a walkable option... Will try to go by there one weekend though and see it.

Thing is you are really either/or with the water v town thing. My honest view? Unless you go for broke and go right out to Dunoon or Troon or something are you really going to feel that you live a life connected to the water? If you need to be well connected, I would think you’ll regret going further off transport links to be ‘closer to the water and end up not really getting either benefit. I would look at Bishopton.

Gourock isn’t bad mind you, some nice shops!

Sturmundcalm · 23/09/2024 18:04

yeah, it's not really about doing stuff on the water it's about being able to see it... i lived in the central belt at one point and HATED not being able to see the coast even if i went for a walk. having grown up and lived about 95% of my life beside the coast i really would prefer to stick with it. doesn't need to be a house with a sea view or anything but i do need to be able to walk (fairly easily) either to a promenade or up a hill with a view of the water.

def wouldn't consider troon or dunoon though!

What about Largs? It's got good transport links to Glasgow and is only half an hour from Greenock.
