UCAS tariff points and Scottish universities

I'm confused by Scottiish Universities and UCAS tariff points. It seems some universities dont use tariff points so that makes it harder to determine if DC has the grades or not for the course they want to do.

DC currently has BBBCC and is doing 2Hs and 1 AH this year. DC's courses of interest have varying grade requirements (DC would be contextual) ranging from AABBB to BBBB.

Its difficult to ascertain if DC has the required grades or what more they would need to achieve if the university does UCAS tarrif points or not.

Under UCAS tariff points, they may meet the BBBB requirement as an example as the tariff points they currently has seem to add up. But the university may still want DC to achieve another B? I'm utterly confused and yes did try to email the university admissions and they didn't respond?

DC attended a Glasgow online talk where the snobby man said if it says 4 As you need 4 As although he was talking about business which DC isn't applying to. The online talk was a general admissions talk.

Does anyone have any insight into points that they could share please?

Where my DD wants to go, they accept C’s as part of a contextual offer. She’d need BBCC. Normal offer BBBB. But it is quite a creative degree so a lot goes on interview and portfolio, rather than just grades.

It's ABCC for the uni degree course DS is looking at 🤷‍♀️

Similar to DS and the course he is applying for, a lot of weighting will go into the portfolio not so much Higher grades...

Normal offer ABBB but as its a creative degree its more focused on the portfolio.

what I'm trying to figure out is if DC has BBBCC and the course they're applying for asks for ABBBC (contextual), does that mean they will be asked to get an A or could it be alright if they only get more Cs this year? Similarly if they are asking for BBBB would they be asked to get a B or would Cs be enough. I've asked all the admissions teams and each one has given me a vague response along the line of every application will be considered holistically.

Partly it will be down to how much they want someone. If they look at your application and think you are a brilliant candidate set to become their star student then they may accept lower grades.

It will partly depend on how popular the course is, but I would think that your DC will need to get the grades (or exceed them) that have been stated, unless a uni is struggling to meet its quota.

What's the deadline for the applications? DS very relaxed about it all. He said today that they needed to be completed at home if not finished in school yet. Everything very different, it's all done online these days. You can do bits at a time then save and come back another time.

29 January I think (its always January), so still time. DDs school are doing it in stages too with deadline 8 November I think for them to ask their teachers to complete a reference form. All of which will be collated into a 200 word reference from the teacher (there's three sections and I think the part about subjects is 200 words or so DD tells me). Once that's done, the application gets sent.

Assuming he wasn’t wanting to apply for Oxbridge, Medicine, Vet or Dentistry or he would have missed the boat which sailed on 15th October.

Every other course is meant to treat all applicants the same so long as they apply before the January deadline. So no benefit to applying in October instead of early January. You also don’t need to apply to five courses at once. You could apply to three now and depending if you get a favourable of not outcome before January decide on your other two in January (though you might also not get any response until after then).

@GillBeck definitely not medicine or dentistry. Still plenty time, think he hopes to get the final parts completed next week. I emphasised best to get it done as soon as possible especially with Christmas fast approaching😬😂

Yes, it is a relief to get it away.
