Has anyone's DC done Camp America or equivalent? DS considering doing this after S6 exams are finished in the spring/summer. He has a spring birthday whenhe turns 18 next year.

Any thoughts? Any experiences to share?

Several friends of DD's have done it, she is 19 and thinking about it for next year. Yes you get paid, but it's not much. Free bed and board and I think it's about $1000 - $1500 for the summer but that's for several weeks work, the camp DD's friend was in last year he worked 6 days a week and slept in the bunkhouse with the campers too. It's FULL ON.

You also have to pay to register on the programme, pay your own flights, checks, visas. Also DD's friend found all the flights were from London so you have the additional cost of getting down there.

If you're not bothered about the money it sounds like an amazing experience. If the main goal is to earn cash to support you through your studies, there are far better ways of doing that.

I did it at 20 and had the most amazing time. I wish I'd done it earlier so I could have done multiple summers. Most of the people at the camp I went to had been going for years. I'm still in touch with most of them and have worked with some of them throughout my 20's as a lot were entrepreneurs and sought me out to work with them. We also travelled together after the camp. I learned songs, games and skills I now use as a parent. So I gained a LOT from it. It was just the best.

Be prepared - mobiles are only allowed for very limited periods. It’s mostly an offline experience.

Now I feel really old, majority of the population didn't have mobile phones when I did it.

It feels incredibly brave now, I basically got on a plane and was told someone would pick me up at the other end, I had no way of contacting them.

Yeah same! And we'd go to the internet cafe on our day off to send emails home about what we'd been up to...sometimes! I think I probably did it twice the whole summer 😂

My son has just finished this, at a camp in Pennsylvania and is currently travelling around- he flew to California afterwards and is hiking The Grand Canyon this weekend. He was a general counsellor and taught climbing. He was paid $1400 at the end of camp and has spent the lot travelling! He went to Fiji last summer doing a similar thing, there isn't just opps in the USA. So good for them to experience the world and other cultures!

Best summer of my life. I was so miserable going back home to university. I didn't make any money though, accomm and food are paid for and the 'pocket money' was enough for other living expenses over there and to spend on days off etc
